...with in camera editing only (no other editing, not even cropping or rotation)
Who wants this one?
Rules: You must have 5 or more ribbons, at least one of them blue at the time of entry (that excludes me right now) |

I suspect it's a bad idea, yes. Not sure the masters want to play with minimal editing; half of what makes a finished product is the skill required to get to to where the photographer "sees" what he or she wishes to present. |

If you are going to just call it Masters...then you need to take into account the whole package that these ballplayers come with....it isn't just a good photo (in camera) but it is the polishing of that photo after the fact.
If you want to segregate it...then you need to stipulate the title of the challenge. For example -
- Masters of Camera (photography only - minimal editing)
- Masters of Editing (using a prechosen image, the same for all)
- Masters of Masters (photography and editing)

I would go for a masters challenge with editing, but one of the rules would be you would have to upload the origional into the photograhers comments box and a complete list of how you got to the finished product, so not only do the masters get a special challenge. Normal people can take away and learn from everyone of the photos entered as well. |

The idea comes from "being a master"... I do understand most of the ribbon winner photos went under extreme editing. but, I don't think it's all that, and more to it. Master supposed to know his or her camera settings, his or perspective better than regular people. I am sure this could be a very good challenge, and I am pretty sure most people love to try it out. There is no one killed at the end after all, but we would see what good settings and perspective from the viewfinder can do.
Kind of encouragement challenge to those who believes in out of camera photos. |

I understand... I assume with 5 ribbons, and a blue, a person should (could) have all above. Trust me, I thought about that too, but saying "Masters" only, I challenge those who edit more afterwards also.
sample: IreneM is a macro master... she got most her ribbons with macro shots and editing. Here is the thing, the shot itself and editing are not the only things, but her perspective in macros what makes her photos good. So, I think she can enter to this challenge and probably win another ribbon :)
I think there was one in the past and it was also called "Masters challenge". Requirement was to have 3 ribbons I think. I made it little more difficult to enter with 5 ribbons, that also include a blue, which should get good results with no editing.

I don't think so... I know some of you guys will think that way, and get upset because I exclude other people in DPC... but think about the battle of masters, and what could come out of it. Like watching a masters karate or something, or all star baseball... entertaining :) |

every normal challenges on the site already allow that - minus the no-editing rule.

Hmm.... now that I think about, Leo may be on to something. Perhaps the mere mortals should simply not enter challenges. :-) |

That includes me too by the way, but I love to watch (and vote) it though. This challenge could encourage people who believe in out of camera photos (repeated) |

Personally I rather like the idea. It is refreshing to gaze upon the works of art that can be produced in this milieu.
Bring it on... this fella is really looking forward to it.

Could we run it alongside a Posthumous ribbon holders challenge? |

If you're going to do an out of camera challenge, I want in. I have suggested this before and I hope it won't be done under the rules that are suggested in this thread.
As for the op's idea, I like it but I'm here to participate in all the challenges this site has to offer, if my time allows, that's what I pay for. If challenges start popping up with restrictions I may feel left out at some point. Making this a side challenge is another idea.

I think excluding people is a quick and dirty way to turn this place into a ghost town. People who have won ribbons do not have exclusive right to creativity and are as likely to produce a dud as the next guy and the newest memeber here is capable of producing an exquisite photo.
I think it might be really interesting to see if the "masters" are masters with the camera or with Photoshop It might even the field a little bit.

There have been Masters challenges before with great results. but something tells me the site creators have become more diplomatic (the last Master's challenge was in 2004).
Personally, since there hasn't been a Masters challenge in the time I've been able to submit in one, I'd really enjoy a Masters challenge of this variety. I'd like to be able to crop though .. and maybe some basic edit ... and maybe shift around large elements and merge 16 time-lapsed photos ... uh ... =)
But seriously, a minimal edit Masters challenge sounds great!
I'd say 1 or 2 ribbons should be enough though.

... surely not, if we consider the 500 plus entries on every single Free Study Challenge.

... absolutely true, and when these new members have amassed a sufficient number of ribbons, they too can compete in the "Masters Challenge".
