Not sure about this. I like some elements. (slight window reflecton, clock on the wall reading 5 after 7) but it has no pop no wow factor. mainly disapointed that I missed when she was sweeping in the front of the store. would have been a stronger pic if I had caught that.

I think

It's art if you had something to say and you think you were even partially successful in doing so. What did you want people to see here? What will people take away from this? If you can't answer this question, it's not good art I don't think.

But that's just me.

I know this place....Woodstock, NY right on Tinker St.! The name comes from a scripture. "You shall not live by bread alone, but by ever word that comes out of the mouth of God." I believe it!!! Oh...and they do make good bread that is also distributed to other stores in the Hudson Valley.

To look at as just a photo of something I find that it is well done. However, it does not say anything to me like it does to Gracious who might have stronger ties because she has been there. Technically I find it to be a good photo though.

i think if you have to *ask* if it is art, then it is not art.

to boil it down to its very essence, art is art when you say it is, and ideally when you mean it. whether or not that art is successful in achieving recognition and/or appreciation in the eyes of others is something completely seperate, though nevertheless important - because what is art if no one can see it (akin to if a tree falls in the forest...)?

Art is crap. Defining it, classifying it, annointing it - seems to usually be an excercise in mental masturbation for the artistic elite.

(Don't know why I got this bug up my rear end all the sudden...)

I just hope to take the occasional aesthetically pleasing pitcher, and maybe once in a while communicate something to others.

Joanna, that shot is, to me, quite pleasing. Very nice work. :) I do agree that it might have been stronger with the person in some other possition than with her back to you. But it still catches a mood - alone in the store, after closing - nice tie to the name on the window.

To me this is art. I like it very much.

I think it is Art when you (the author) truly love it.
Therefore it is probably crap.

Neither art nor crap, but a nice sepia.

In Photoshop if you went into select color and toned down the white a little the intensity of the lights would be less distracting and it would be even better.

I'm pretty sure Photoshop CS has a new option called "make it art" that is supposed to get pretty good results.

ScottK - if we can't masturbate with our minds, then I'm not really sure what the point of having one is. Maybe you'd be happier as a tree, or as a creature with a mind that isn't aware of it, like some type of tropical fish? ;-p

If only.... :p back at ya! ;)

I don't think I'll dig any deeper on that analogy - it would just become ironic.

Pretty much my thought.....

Thanks to everyone who gave input and insight. Last night while I was playing with these images a good friend remarked that he liked all the pictures I had taken except this one. "It didn't speak to him." Like a mother lioness defending a cub I went at him for over an hour ....... (That will teach him to give and honest opinion) The more I looked at the pic the more flawed it became and the more dissatisfied with my burgeoning progress as a photographer I became.

I sent this to the forum under the title "is this Art or Crap" not only for validation but strong and honest guidance. Even if that guidance was "yes crap but nice saturation" or something like that.

so to all that offered criticism and advice....

Thank you very much for your generosity of sprit and time.

As for my friend I apologized today. He understands I'm nutz ;)
