Jarjar, That first shot it looked like more to me that the couch had the spot on focus. If you look closely you can see some fine detail on the couch. The kid on the right is farther back than the one on the left and would explain why he is in more focus than the one on the left.

I have the same 50mm lens you have and it is a great lens but it has taken some time to get used to, I'd never shot with a prime lens before last week. But when I was in Peru, that lens stayed stuck on my camera for 80% of the time. I do have the 70-300mm VR lens as well and that one performs like a rockstar on the D700. By then end of the trip I started using that one as more of a portrait lens cause it would get some super fine detail that my 50mm didn't. Both lens had their uses though.

DoF is much shallower at focal lengths in this camera too than the D300 I had shortly. I played around with some macro with the 105mm lens and at 1:1 it's a lot smaller. Hope you are enjoying the camera, it's awesome!

Sorry for the joke, it was too hard to resist since it was overpowering my mind as soon as I read your post. I tried checking what autofocus mode you were using- since the autofocus is different from the D2, but data didn't come out completely in the version of Capture I have. If you are using 3D matrix it could be that the camera is spazzing out and switching between the two "perceived" areas of focus. Have you checked in software exactly where your focus point was located?

I noticed you're using multiple focus points. dynamic area af 9 points

Have you tried using only one focus point, let's say the middle one and take some shots of an inanimate object with the camera on a tripod? Maybe it's focusing on a focus point you're not expecting it to.

It's understandable that the camera searched for a focus point with that object. The middle part, where the focus was being taken, has no contrast to help out the focusing system. I know this is getting long but would you take a picture with the same settings but with a focus target that is easier for the camera to do its job. Like newsprint or a barcode from some box. Or use the same object and focus on the upper right round alarm. Make sure your focus point is directly in the middle of that alarm.

It looks like your focusing system is not up to par with what it's supposed to be doing. More after your new images are posted.

I'm starting to think that JarJar should send me his D700 for a couple of months. I'll send him my D200 which has a proven history of focusing.

Seriously though, after the last couple of images I'm starting to realize that a study of autofocus is in order. Autofocus simply can't work on every target you select. There has to be contrast differences for the camera. I really don't think from what I've seen there is any problem with the camera. And.... with the last couple of images I must point out that all lenses have a minimum focus point. I haven't looked it up for the 24-70 but 3 ft has got to be pretty close to that point.

nikon seem to think there is a problem, as they have requested i send the camera and lense back to them or get them replaced by the store you purchased them from.
I opened the post for views and to see if anyone else had problems ...im not an expert but neither a novice.
I may be me with a lack of experience with full frame....then again it may not be me but the camera.

Min focal distance 0.38 m/1.2 ft. (with focal length 35-50 mm) I was hotting at 50mm so above min distance

Good luck. I hope they get you going OK with the new camera. Sometimes the early adopters have to put up with a fly in the ointment.

Well if they want to exchange the camera for you in store, jump on it. Nikon wants good PR for this camera and will go the extra step for servicing them. This is good news, let us know the results with the new camera.

cheers
