I live near Pittsburgh. You see, if we had things like this on the menu, we'd just come right out and tell you what you were eating. No need for fancy code names. We'd just come right out and say "Bull Balls - $7" or whatever.

I hate to admit it, but as I was eating them, and as my brain was thinking "oysters," I actually thought they were pretty tasty. And oddly enough, my testosterone level has been sky high these last few weeks.

lol well.. i think the name is just to trick people into eating them and not thinking they're gross. see, if you know what they are you would never let yourself eat them, but not knowing, everyone seems to like them. kinda weird

Getting back to the notion that this is a photography forum... I actually have this not-so-flattering shot of my wife with the appetizer dish:

The outside of the building (notice the giant bull sculpture... wonder if its balls were intact):

My meal, which was fantastic (with the Plate O' Balls in the background):

The best-known gimmick of the Big Texan is that they offer a 72 ounce steak for sale. If you can eat it and some other side dishes within an hour, you get it for free. Otherwise, it's $72. While we were there, a woman and a man were each tackling the 72 ouncer:

Ahem, the Cattlemen's Association out here has a Rocky Mountain Oyster fry (Big Event) every year. I think it conveniently coincides with round up. That's how all those bulls become steers, you know. (and why your steaks don't taste gamey)... anyway, now you have officially been initiated. Go ahead, you can call yourself a cowboy!

Food Channel is great - you learn about some cool restaurants, how to prepare tasty new dishes and learn about cultural foods....

And like you (but I never had the experience) some foods you wish you didn't know.

Well if you are ever in Beijing I would NOT recommend you go to this restaurant as that all of it's menu serves just er - well if you really want to know here is an article Beijing's Exclusive P***** Restaurant

Hmmm, come to think of it Food Channel could be a resource to show you foods and places NOT to eat:-)

BWWAAHHAHAHAAAAAA...

am laughing so friggin hard my cats just ran from the room...

oh btw if it makes you feel any better, they're likely testicles from male calves, balls from a full-grown bull would be mighty big and REAL chewy...

Stop it... it hurts laughing so much.... I love the menu.... If you think it's seafood, go with the shrimp is just classic.... Yeah paying attention would be helpful.

On the flip side.... I once order sweet breads thinking it was something ENTIRELY different then what it is.... but not in your league but a long shot.....

Rocky Mountain oysters is a North American culinary name for edible offal, specifically buffalo, boar, or bull testicles. They are usually peeled, coated in flour, pepper and salt, sometimes pounded flat, then deep-fried.

"sometimes pounded flat" eeep!

were yours pounded flat alan? or were they still juicy?

My testicles were still round, good and juicy. I'm pretty sure no one has ever asked me that before! I don't really want to think too much about having my testicles pounded flat.

This is one of the funniest threads/stories I've seen in a long time! Thankfully when someone asked me if I wanted to try them they explained exactly what they were.. I politely refused :D
