getting back on track:
The 1.4 is great. If you can afford it, buy it. If it wasn't for the 70 pound 1.8, everyone would be saying what a great value lens it is... which it is anyways, even at its 200 ish RRP.
It has better bokeh than the 1.8, better focussing and is sharper from f/2 onwards. If you're even considering it get one and if you don't like it, send it back within the returns period for a full refund. |

Yes, back on track. Sorry I let things devolve.
Summary of image-quality opinions so far expressed:
Several complaints that it is soft (even at 3.2)
Several suggesting it is sharper (at 2.0 and beyond)
Everyone seems to agree that the bokeh rendering is better
It is sounding like a good lens to buy used. I would have a better outdoor portrait lens than I have currently (better bokeh than the 1.8), and if I get a known-sharp copy, I will likely see some sharper images in the not-quite-wide-open range. And I would save a few bucks (though not much probably).
Thank you all for the discussion. I love lens talk.

| I bought mine off craigslist locally for $275.00 and I'm pretty sure he would have taken less, but I felt bad cuz I also bought his 85/1.8 and got him down to $275 for that. Very nice guy ... took good care of his stuff. |

Yeah, it was a good week. I also bought scarbrd's 17-40L for $525 and sold my 24-70L for $900
So for $175, I completely changed my lens line-up ... except for the 200L which is stayin' with me ... forever. |
