I've been looking into ways to display some of my photos locally and I'm hoping some people here have experience with that. My area has several "call for entries" on both craigslist and local art shops, etc. Many of these call for entries are silent auctions with a best in show award. I can set my own starting bid price (splitting the profit 50/50 with the gallery). One ad I found stated that the average selling price for art was $400.

1 - What's a popular size (11x14 framed in 20x16, 8x10 framed in 11x14, etc)?
2 - What's a good starting price (pretend it cost me $75.00 to print, matte, and frame)?
3 - Is a local silent auction even a good idea?
4 - Simple, thick black frame or something more ornate?
5 - Do I sign the print?

Thanks in advance, looking forward to your thoughts.

50/50 always stops me
most that I'm paying (if sold) had been 20% usually 15%
-- though i have been staying away from commercial galleries & aiming towards coops & municipal instead --
i can't rationalize that little on an image that i spent hours to produce
(i.e 400$) get 200 and only make 125$ on an image ..

IE the canvases i've received today cost on average 140$ just for canvas
stretching will be another 20-50$ (wood & hardware) i'll put them up for 800-1000
i will realize ~600 from any i sell (if)
(i'm aiming for a 65% profit otherwise i have a large net loss presuming i sell any)

sorry - to answer your queries in order
1) 11x14 or 14x17 or larger are better but only if the picures can suppor it
2) i was told rule of thumb is 3x materials .. i prefer 5x
3) only for getting known or otherwise supporting a cause
4) simple simple simple
5) i don't but i have crappy handwriting ( i sign the rear)

Is that 50% of sales or 50% of profit? 50% of sales seems a bit steep, but you should ask about what they do to make sure your art sells. IOW what they're offering you, aside from a wall where people can see your art. Do they host an opening, where you can meet the people who might purchase? If they do, do they provide the drinks and snacks? Do they place ads in the local art paper, send press releases to the local paper? Advertise the opening? Send out flyers to regular patrons on their mailing list? Do they hang your art for you? Provide help hanging? What's their track record with selling art? How many sales do they typically make from a show?

If they're really going all out to promote your art and help you sell it, then 50% is probably reasonable. If not, then it may not be worth it. Of course it will depend a lot on what the local market is like. If all the galleries locally are charging the same, then you might be stuck.

1) I like to print full frame, so I print 8x12, mat with a double mat, 2.5" top and sides, 3.5" on bottom, 1/4" overlap on each side of the print, add the frame and glass.

2) How much is your art worth? How much do similarly sized photos sell for locally? How much do you want/need to make?

3) I dunno, I never looked into one.

4) I prefer a black undermat with a white overmat for color work with about 1/2" of the undermat showing.

5) I do.
