For whatever reason I remembered this morning that Tungsten WB + flash makes a very cool-toned cast, so I decided to try it out on some morning macro shots. I love the color on some of these! Anyone else ever do this for the sake of getting neat colors?
I don't have a membership here, so here's the link to my Flickr. I've only posted 5 of the pictures I took, I think, so it's the first 5 that have my WB experimentation. Fun stuff! I'll have to see what other kinds of results I can get. |

yeah i tweak sunsets to make them warmer, and sometimes my canon likes being blue so to get the reds and yellos back in the sky i have a custom wb of 10,000k, usually it's around 6000k. |

Sometimes, it even works even when you aren't trying....
I was out shooting for a side challenge last year under 'minimal editing' rules set and took this image with the tungsten WB setting by mistake. I loved the cool blue look of this shot and decide to not 'fix' the WB from the RAW image.

2 photos with the same setup. The only difference was the WB.

All the time.
Even when I used to shoot film, one way to give an especially cold look to something was to shoot a tungsten film outdoors or under strobe.
Also, we used to buy film by emulsion number, say 200+ rolls of the same batch, shoot a few test rolls to find the necessary color correction to get a neutral color from it then freeze the rest. That way, when you needed to shoot something, you didn't have to fiddle about with correcting to neutral.
Digital lets you play around so much with stuff like that and avoid having to use a bunch of cc filters. |

Weddings and indoor shots, especially gymnasiums (lighting is terrible photographically)
done as a custom white balance.
Night photography
and Las Vegas lighting is great to do in Tungsten WB

Sure, just recently, I set the WB as cool as it went, and then made it even cooler while converting from RAW:

Max,
Yes. Here are some shots I took this weekend. I placed CTO gels over my flash and set my WB to tungsten. So what happens is... anything lit by the flash has fairly natural coloring. Anything that the flash can't reach gets a deep blue color cast.

Its a good way to spice up an otherwise bland shot.
