Yikes. This is the first I am hearing of it. I live about 35km from there. Hopefully everyone is okay.

From the linked article (emphasis added):
"Thousand of residents have been evacuated from homes and businesses while a section of Canada's busiest highway has been closed following a series of massive explosions in a suburban Toronto neighbourhood early Sunday."

This facility was located in a residential area?!

A propane facility exploded in the northwest of the city, far from the downtown core.

Here's the intersection at Google Maps. Here's a zoomed-out view of Toronto for comparison. Don't blame Slippy -- he (and I) work closer to the area where the name "Toronto" is seen on that map. Though I suppose he could drive up there.

It's pretty serious, but the Star says this: "OâHallarn said since the fire started, only one person has been transported to hospital, with a sprained ankle."

But: "Eyewitness accounts say explosions were so powerful that windows were knocked out, framed photographs hanging on peopleâs walls have been broken and there are reports of cars on fire."

No, I live in the city of Burlington, about seventy kilometres west of the downtown core. I work in the business district of the core, about fifteen kilometres south of there. Thanks for asking though. ;-)

"Suburban" does not mean "residential".... Many suburban areas are industrial.

It's a propane distributor, not a refinement plant or something like that. The area is also residential.

Hmmm...I've frequently heard "suburban" to mean an area populated by people. "The city is losing population to the suburbs...", or, "Yep, I'm a suburbanite now...". I hadn't heard "industrial" and "suburban" used together before.

I thought my dog was having a seizure at first, banging against walls. It was pretty freaky.

"Location: You wish you knew."

LOL. Every time a dog bangs against the walls, a wish comes true. You just divulged your location;)

Hope your dog is OK. Could you hear the explosions?

Oh yeah, loud! The first one woke me up, it was loud but I thought it was a dream. Then I kept hearing these thumps that sounded like they were coming from the basement, which is where my dog sleeps. After a while I heard police sirens and realized it was from outside. I live 15 km away from this station, but that first bang was strong enough to shake my house.

From the Star:

The Technical Standards and Safety Authority has sent two propane experts to the scene at the request of the Ontario Fire Marshalâs office, which is investigating the explosion.

As officers of the court, they have the power to make arrests in the case of infractions of TSSA regulations.

âWhy would they allow a propane company to open up in a residential area?â said Fernando Caschera, 56. âI donât understand.â

Sunrise, open around the clock as a propane dealer, âshould never have been there in the first place,â said Merv Mostoway, 73.

âIt was only a matter of time â I knew one day something stupid would happen.â
