Oh Mick...not only are you my HERO, but you are a very thorough hero as well. Thanks for the long posts. Yes, your screen capture is very helpful! I'm referring to the active tab icon and the address bar icon.

I found on DGRIN how to change replace the little icon with one of your own with this tutorial. I have not tried it out yet because I don't really want my own icon...I just want to get rid of the Smug Mug one.

Here is the thread discussing the tutorial:

I guess SmugMug does not allow *.ico files so in addition to making a little customized icon, you have to find a place to house those type of files as well.

You know...it's all about the learning process and finding what works with our own style...right? All I can say is I'm have a blast building it...it's just FUN! I'm going to try your code later tonight and I'll keep you posted.

I'm watching Battlestar Galactica DVD's now...;-)

Thanks...you are the best!

Okay, I got'cha now. If you don't have one, I can send you a completely transparent icon. Or you can draw the little icon images (16 x 16 pixels, and 32 x 32 pixels) and send them to me and I'll make you your own custom icon.

Just for giggles, I tried the icon tutorial. I got it working in Firefox, but not in IE. I had to open a free account on Ripway.com so I'd have a place to host the icon file.

Anyway, it sort of works... I guess. :D

Wait, can you reserve those unique domain names through smugmug, or do you do that some other way? Also, how?

Register your domain name with any of the internet registrars, then tell smugmug what you've chosen.

Mick...you will be so proud of me! I finally changed the long code for your short code and the text title bar reads correctly. Thank you!

Also, I added the favicon code and as you predicted, the little icon appears in Firefox but not in IE7. I did a little research on this and apparently the issue is a common one. I ran the URL of my site through a favicon validator and got this:

Two icons appear in the validator and I have no clue how to remove the original "smugmuggy" icon and have on the little horse chess piece show up.

Any ideas?

Congratulations! You're now an experienced web developer! :D

Nice icon. Like mine, yours works fine in Firefox and not in IE.

Sorry. I don't have a clue either. Some people at dgrin have been asking smugmug to make this a control panel option. I think the problem with IE is that it grabs the first icon it sees, then caches it. And the first icon is always smugmug's.

I finally got a start on redesigning my own smugmug site. I made a new banner image. I rearranged the galleries into catagories and sub-catagories and moved them off my home page. I added some html-only pages for info and whatnot. I'm still working on those. I also added a slideshow to the homepage. What I'm most proud of though is my new navagation menu. I created it in Visual Studio using CSS and HTML. I made the background images in PS2. The hard part was getting the buttons to stay centered on the page when the page is resized. Right now it's only a single-level menu, but I'm working on making it a multi-level dropdown/flyout menu.

Anyway, if you have a mniute, check it out and let me know what you think. micknewton.smugmug.com

Dang...now, I'm just ENVIOUS...your site looks professional, hightech and I LOVE your navigation bar. And, the biggest problem I see with your photography is all those gorgeous photos are not sitting in MY portfolio! ;-P

Just a quick sidenote that after the slideshow loaded...I was prompted for a password, but then later that disappeared when I went back to it. So maybe you were working on it while I was looking at it!

Anyways, I will have to peruse the wealth of your collection with a relaxing glass of wine, but the structure of your site looks AWESOME! The little camera icon is a perfect detail to match your title graphic with the camera and all the lenses.

Gosh...does that say...::polite cough::....CANON?!!!

::promptly faints::

I keep an eye on this thread as we have a smugmug account as well. We are slowly tweaking it trying to make it have a more professional appearance. Check it out if you are interested - Toole Photography.

Mick - I would be interested in your contact page code. Is there a thread over there that you can point me to to install that?

Hey Timfy--great site! How did you get it so that all of your photos in the slideshow are the same height like that?
08/09/2008 04:01:20 PM · #71
Tim, I got my contact form from response-o-matic *giggle*, then just dropped the code onto a html-only page. Search digigrin for "html-only page". Its not hard.

I'm due to renew soon. Debating whether or not to stay a SMer for another year or head off a different direction. Since I don't let clients order for themselves anymore, I really don't need that particular feature...

Edited 'cause I had the forms site name wrong.

Not quite sure how I did anythign over there. Cut and paste is all I do. ;)
08/09/2008 04:25:09 PM · #73
Well, uh, where did you cut-paste from?
08/09/2008 04:36:12 PM · #74
ok - i think this is the script that I have plugged into my bio page- the bold areas are the ones that you should need to fill in to have it work. I think thats all you need. Let me know if it works for you.
