Can you use a GPS or USB charger on a cell phone without damaging it? I have a Motorola Krazor with a dying battery and I left my charger at home (because I'm a dolt).
It has one of the micro USB plugs (like on most of our cameras) and my GPS car charger has the same port - the GPS will sync to a computer and charge that way too. I could probably get my hands on a camera USB cable as well, and could charge it through my laptop, if that would be safe (safer).
So does anyone know if the power units are the same and it's safe to use, or will it cook my phone?

I interchange my mini-usb devices/chargers/computers all the time and have never had a single problem (and I've got a LOT of devices...) :P
I don't know the exact specs offhand, but I believe the any mini-usb charger will provide the same voltage, and your device will take care of it's own current-limiting.
So, my vote -- plug away.

what model razor do you have and what service. you can look up both your GPS and Motorola manual online to see if they have the same specs.

I have a BlackBerry and found that my Motorola Blue Tooth charger works perfectly to charge my BlackBerry! |

Hmm, interesting idea. Manuals are online so I'll take a look.
And cdrice, thanks - I was thinking along those lines too.

I have the razor phone and I plug my phone into to my computer all the time. I will not hurt it but it is suggested that you never charge your phone over 2 hours at a time. If you do all it does it shorten the charge length. Plug it in man you'll be just fine. |

Thanks all. I got a mini-USB cord from my girlfriend and plugged it in - "Unauthorized Charger," just like the GPS charger had been identified as. And no charging.
I happened to be near a Verizon store today and asked them about it - they suggested checking the Verizon website (I had tried Motorolas, to no avail). Downloaded the correct driver and now my phone is charging!
So if anyone else ever tries to do this, make sure you get the driver first and spare yourself some cussing :-)
