Being a South African, albeit in exile, I must admit to the apartheid system introduced in my country by the British many moons ago. Dismantling it took the real South Africans a relative few years knowing processes like that may take a long time.
Apartheid does not, and has never ment 'live apart and hate', that '.....heid' merely means "being". Apartheid was a system of seperation before anything else. Yip, sickening and very wrong. And the whites to be blamed for it, sure and sorry.
Discrimination. Just as it is at this moment in time anywhere else in this world. And please, do not even try and tell me in your country there is no racial discrimination. I am not saying you are, I am talking about each and every country.
"White male appointment 'broke policy' 2008-08-08 14:21:09
That a white man is the manager of the a unit of the Legal Aid Board has raised more than a few eyebrows. Full Story...." From a heading on the news today, is this not also discrimination? After 14 years of so-called freedom? And the random killing of Zimbabwe citizens, Somalies..... xenifobia, they call it. Not also racial discrimination? Two wrongs makes it right? As the South African Constitution says "... will not discriminate UNFAIRLY based on bla bla bla and bla" Thus fair discrimination is OK?
Just steaming for the blindness of this world, the ignorence being fed by the newsmakers(and Miss Carolina?). 20,000 violent murders a year.... primarily black-on-black but sytematically applying genoside to the farming communities(YOUTUBE the keywords and cry in your pretzels!).
So, am I a racist? Yes and no, I do take comfort to be amoungst people like me, which ever race or status. But more serious, I am a classist. I hate killers, rapists, pedophiles and primitivsm, whether black, pink, red or white. I hate politicians, the public servants that are now served by the people. And yes, I am afraid of the locust of the human race on every continent. I am afraid that Africa is corging itself in its own blood, yet the world does not even seem to care.
Now, this "Don't care" attitude seeing the Hutsis and the Tutsis killing each other in the millions, the Xhosa and the Zulus turning on each other, Mugabe starving his own people etc etc, isn't that in itself discrimination?
So what is my point? Not even I know, but this world is not the one I grew up in. I am afraid of what I see. But this I know, discrimination is alive and well and living in you and me. |

discrimination is alive and well and living in you and me.
I kind of take offense at this statement. Speak for what lives in you only please. You have no idea what lives inside me or my thoughts or my actions. |

Sorry to have offended. Let me try the positive side and exclude some...
I am trying to understand the world around me, and so do most other thinking people.
Basic Human Good lives in most people and me.
The ability to think is inherent in me, as it is in most people.
There is a bad side in me and in most other people.
Most people, and I, will try to see what is agreeable and what not and perhaps even debate it, discuss it and maybe even comment on it.
Most people, and I, are more sensitive than the others who has bigger ego needs and prefers to personalise issues not even important unless a shoe fits.
Discrimination and even racism is alive and well and living in me and most other people.
Living in a land of lies and deniel is not in most others, nor in me..
The rest of us are holier than thou and walk on water. |

We take offense to this kind of statement because it resonates. Few, if any, people who are honest with themself can say that they have not, and do not, discriminate in any way. Discrimination seems to be an element of human nature, ugly but there nonetheless; we sort and we categorize and then we apply ranks to those categorizations.
Probably better to recognize it in ourselves and face it than deny that it's there... But then again, you could truly be one of those exceptional people who is totally free from discrimination. If that's the case, then I applaud you.

I submit to you that you are both mistaken and correct. This is the same world you grew up in - however it may not be the world you were aware of. Meaning that the definition of world is both macro and micro - further meaning that the whole world (macro) is the same as the one you grew up in; specifically it has always garnered likes against differents (before and now). Yet your world (micro), the neighborhoods, parental teahings, etc may not have illuminated that racism/classism/ etc, and thus you were unawares. So in one sense (micro) the world you knew growing up may not have represented the world's reality. Your awareness or lack of, does not change reality. The world is racist and classist and many other "ists". Some may be less and some may be more, but all are some. |
