Hey guys...I have a friend who just got some flavor of the Rebel. He's wanting to get a lens in the 75-300 range, and wants to spend $250 max. I know...this leaves little room for choice. I was wondering if there is a specific model in this price range that I should tell him to go for (or avoid). There's 4 versions I see of the 75-300, with great model names like II, II/III, III, and the IS USM.

The options I see are (from Amazon--) as follows:

Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III $150
Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM $200
Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS $300

Or a used version of one of the above, or something older (if it was known to be a pretty good performer), from KEH for a lower price.

Basically, what I'm looking for is the lens to avoid. And if Tamron or another has a similarly priced lens that performs, I'd welcome that suggestion too.

Thanks in advance for any help! :)

My wife uses the Sigma 70-300 APO its in the price range and is rather nice, I rate it above the 75-300 USM III

I have the 75-300mm III I never use it... After getting my 50mm 1.4 I just don't find a use for it as the quality of my 50mm is so much greater.

I've been thinking about picking up the Sigma 70-300 APO, and from the reviews I've found, I have to agree with your statement.
Sigma 70-300 APO vs Canon 75-300 USM

Here's a review of the Canon 55-250 IS . It's pretty comparable to the Canon 75-300 from what I've read.

This is just my opinion as I don't own any of these lenses, but I plan on buying the Sigma.
I would love to hear what any owners out there have to say.

Thanks for the replies. I think he found the IS on the 55-250 enticing enough to spend the extra cash for it.
