At this powerful image by hazelmay
This deserved so much better. I think the post challenge comment by violinist123 sums up perfectly everything that's wrong with DPC.

From an emotional impact point of view, this is one of the strongest images I have seen on this site. The look in her eyes, I can't even describe how I interpret it. You really, really caught an exceptional moment in time. |
It's not all about pretty pictures folks. There's a lot that's right about DPC, but for an image this powerful to get overlooked this badly makes me sad. |

We all know that DPC voters go for EYECANDY over EMOTIVE everytime..
It is a fantastic shot that can stand on its own anywhere and hazelmay should be totally proud of it.

I think if you look at this objectively you will find that the score was better than the QUALITY of the photo warranted. It is out of focus, grainy and has a really awful border. If this had been a photo of just the woman alone it would have scored horribly. The fact that it was a great Subject and captured an emotional moment definitely improved its score. Even just on a composition level I think it would have been even more powerful had the camera been at the womans point of focus, then the emotion would have been even better. I think the score accurately reflects that this is a poor quality, weakly composed shot of a powerful and compelling subject.
I am kind of new here but it seems clear that noone here is putting down the photographer or the subject of this photo by giving it a moderate score. Just because it is a touching moment does not make it a great photo.
Just my 2 cents

You have to be realistic here, we all know that eye candy that is perfectly framed and shown is going to beat anything else. But in DPC world of photography it will tank.
it is a most hauntingly fabulous picture, one that most parents hope that they never have to take a photo off. It is touching, haunting, desperate, soul depth in the eyes, over whelming. It is a magnificant photo.

The faves it now seems to be getting may make up for the poor score. A great life shot and one with a strong emotional connection. I have to admit though, that without knowing the story behind it, I may have also low voted it. I think this falls into the "photojournalism" genre, and with that kind of photography you just get the shot when it presents itself. |
