there is a fireworks display here tonight and i really would like to catch them well. I have looked at some of the entrys on the fireworks, but was wondering what the ideal settings where as I have seen ISO of 100, exposure from 4 seconds to 13, F5.6 to F13. So i am a little confused, are you using P, A Tv, M, Sports etc
any tips??

I use f8 to f11 and I put my camera on Bulb. I shoot anywhere from .5 to 3 or 4 seconds. Sometimes you need to stay open longer, sometimes shorter, all depends on the intensity of the fireworks. After a while you pick up on how long you should keep it open. You may want just one bloom in your photo or several so you're going to have to judge by yourself what you're looking for. Look for a spot with water so you can get reflections.
Hope it goes well and can't wait to see a few shots.
Good luck JulietNN

I use manual mode, F11-F16, ISO 100 or 200, and 2-4 seconds. I also use a sturdy tripod and a wired, or wireless release.

thanks Jac, I am looking forward to it. Unforntunely right now it is raining , gray and miserable, hopefully it cheers right up before tonight. I am going to check out the people that are setting them up and get a few details from them, and check out the sweet spots.

Thats a nice one Matt.
also another thing i have just learnt by trolling the internet was to be upwind of it all and the first few are teh best as there is less smoke.
it is little tipbits like that that you can only learn from you guys or the internet!

Lowest ISO you can go, Bulb, f8-11, as suggested. Don't forget tripod and cable release.
Have a go at the technique I use of starting out of focus and focusing during exposure.
I'm going to fireworks tomorrow night, and the following week they're going to have three Size 20s go off. Size 20 is the third biggest size, weighing 60-80 kg and going up to about 500 metres. Looking forward to that. ;-Þ
