We were at disneyworld last month and they too were using Nikon cameras.........of course speaking with a few of the photogs about it, they were mostly disappointed as they were always having issues with them. One even asked if he could use my 20D for the rest of the afternoon. :D

*Scratches head*, did you by any chance ask about what type of problems? I've only owned one Nikon, my D300 but I can say after 8000 shots, the only issues I've had are user error. :)

They few that I spoke with, talked about battery issues and some talked about odd exposure problems when using the shoe mounted flash. Odd occurances while using manual mode and ITTL I think they called it, where random shots were blown out white like it went full power, and then sometimes well underexposed with almost a black frame. At one point at Disney in the big tent, they were swapping out one camera for one they brought and another photogs camera wouldnt shoot, so they were trying to get another one for them. But who knows how many actuations these see in a day, or how they are treated and maintained.

While there are many differing views of Ken Rockwell, he makes some valid points (I do somewhat hate to admit this). At the end of the day, any brand camera will take great photos. More often than not, the equipment one is using is not the limiting factor -- especially for a beginner.

When I was buying, I wanted an entry level DSLR. The offerings at the time in my price range were the Nikon D50 and the Cannon Rebel (I think it was a 350). For my hands, the Rebel just didn't work. Therefore, I bought the Nikon. Now that I have a bit of money invested in Nikon lenses, I'll probably stick with them. Plus, the D200 fits me like a glove. Hard to argue with that.

Except in extreme situations, it's not the camera -- it's the photographer.

That's the crux of it.....

The only caveat I would add to that is in this modern world, the most sensible thing to do is select from the broad offerings of either Canon or Nikon.

I say this strictly from an availability and support sense. There are other companies out there, but they simply do not have the market penetration of Canon & Nikon.

You can wander into just about any general mass merchant anywhere and buy Canons, Nikons, and their accompanying lenses and accessories right off the shelf.

I think a good analogy is painting, or drawing. It is entirely possible to create an award winning masterpiece using only a single color.

More advanced cameras are akin to adding more paints to the palette.

However, if the artist is unable to draw a simple circle in one color, all the colors in the world will not make up for that.

Until they learn to draw there is no need for the other colors.

And generally, pros have to get the image everytime including extreme situations. Look at sports shooters - so it's a rainy day and there's a superbowl to photograph you need gear that can work in the pouring rain. I've talked with a guy that has shot under such conditions and literally poured water out of his 1Dn mk2 battery compartment, put in a fresh batt and continued to shoot.

Yeah, Nikon was king in the pro field - years ago. Someone else was king before there was a nikon. So what? Today Canon is king in the pro ranks. It started back in 86 or so when AF became possible. Canon and nikon chose different ways of making AF lenses - nikon put the motor in the body, canon in the lens. Canon users are to rebuy lenses where (to this day) the old nikon MF lenses would work. Seemed like a bad idea at the time, kind of abandoning your users, but Canon's AF was faster to focus and that made all the difference.

You've seen the ads with all the white lenses at sporting events -it's really true. Canon's clean high ISO got wedding photogs in their camp. FF got studio and landscape shooters. 16mp got fashion and others that needed lots of resolution. And the 300D got tons of consumers into the canon 'system'. Nikon makes good gear, especially lenses, but until recently they've not done much for the needs of pro photographers. That has changed in the past 6 to 12 months - at least as far as gear is concerned.

I've still not heard anything good about nikon service. Canon has their CPS deal for pros - expedited repairs w/ discounts and free shipping, free loaner gear and support at conventions and schools - canon shows up with reps, loaner gear, etc. Fuji used to show up but no more. Nikon has never showed up as far as I know. Canon's Explorers of Light program brings pros, ideas and experience to me so that I can learn from them. I don't nikon doing it. And the worlds' largest single owner of nikon gear is right here in my town too!

So either nikon or canon is a good choice IMO. I think Canon is the better choice for me, and most pros agree it's the better choice for them.
