Hi, I'm interested in buying a monopod, but just wanted to know what kind do you recommend? Also, where would you buy it from? What features distinguish a good monopod from a bad one?

I'm very happy with my Manfrotto 681B , and the (abolutely recommended) ball head Manfrotto 486. I use it mostly for concert photos, when there is not much space ,and dim light. This model is somewhat heavy (approx. 1 Kg), and can be extended to 1.70 m. (70 cm fold up). I bought it in a local photo store, but probably is it available on a good web shop.

I concur with rhipster. Manfrotto is the manufacturer, distributed by Bogen. Sometimes referred to as Bogen's.

I use a 484RC2 ball head, with quick detachable plates.

Around the world, there are some fabulous photographic equipment makers, and much of it is highly expensive. For my money, Manfrotto is hard to beat. It is reasonably priced and will last through years of abuse. Also, in the states, it is available at many professional camera stores. Consider their entire line. (No, I do not sell their product nor am I a stock holder. Just a satisfied user.)

With either tri's or mono's, the weight plus the leg lock mechanism, is what is important. I do not like twist leg locks. I prefer lever/tab locks. Fast, secure. However it is a pinch point, trust me.

I have a sunpack that came from Ritz Camera (Quantaray is the same product). It is the only monopod that the local store stocks. I use mine a lot and I even have a 1 year damage protection plan on it. What I like is the quick release on it fits any sunpack or quantaray tripod so I am not switching the release shoe around when using tripod and monopod.
