Currently, I use a minolta dimage 7hi. The histogram shows before shooting. My question relates to the D100. Does the histogram display before taking a shot or only afterwards? |

Only afterwards. It's the difference between an SLR and a rangefinder style, which is what most digital cameras are. In order to see what the lens sees, there's a mirror that directs light up to the viewfinder and therefore not the sensor. The sensor is only exposed when you press the shutter release and the mirror moves up and out of the way, and the shutter opens. I've got both types of camera and I prefer the SLR's viewfinder to the EVF on my F717. In low light I find the EVF very annoying.

Thanks for your very clear answer.
Do SLR users find the lack of pre-shooting histogram support a problem? You see, I've become so used to using it with the minolta that I think I'd have to revise my exposure practices without it.

I think you get used to what to expect in what conditions and in most cases I can predict compensation needed before looking thru the viewfinder.
I prefer the real viewfinder on my 300D than the one on my F707.., for the same reasons as jimmy.
Usually I don;t have the time to take the camera away from my eye to look at the lcd, on odd occasions I'll have a glance to check the histograms good, but thats all I need.
as for the histogram on the D100.
I was using that camera all this weekend and couldn;t find it, so thought it didn;t have one... wish I knew :(

The D100 has a histogram. You set it up in the playback menu, and then you can view it on the monitor after each shot. You can set it for image only, histogram, highlights or both. |
