I like the score, but I don't really like the post-processing I did. I may have actually made the picture worse than the original. I'm thinking of buying a MAC and hopefully CS3.

I think this may be the first time I entered a challenge with a picture not taken in Oman. I'm moving to Senegal in September and will also be working in Gambia, Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde. I'm excited about the possibilities there.

You don't even have to buy me a Starbucks, but I won't turn one down. Take whatever you need. Wonder if Langdon could make that a feature? Point sharing! I like it...

Now this is no fun. I always get stuck with these slow bleeders. Unless it starts out near 8 after 10 votes (was only 7.4 at that point) it's a slow fall down to the mid to low 6s. Since the 66 vote mark the last point I was over 7 the score has been 6.04 (23 votes). :/ Why can't I just start out in the mid 5s and then finish at a 6.4-6.5 where this one is headed? Much more positive that way! :P

Slightly shocked that this one isn't a wee tiny bit higher than it is..... I think I picked a far better shot than the one I had for lawn , yet my lawn is doing better..lol. Oh well its all about what the viewers like , and also in the name of learning!

I started out at 5.5 with my first two votes and am now at a 6.4...however, because I know how hard it must be for you, I'll sacrifice it all and offer to trade with you...;-)

Well if yours is still climbing... SURE HAND IT OVER!!!! I'm now down to 6.68. At this rate a 6.4-6.5 may have been a tad too optimistic.

10 votes: 7.40
66 votes: 7.0
75 votes: 6.88
89 votes: 6.75
91 votes: 6.68 (that's a 5.83 average since vote no. 66.)

ETA: It is surprising it keeps falling so much given that I keep getting comments (up to 17 now). Usually that halts when it starts dropping like that.

Still happy with the score...and it seems to be holding pretty steady so far...

Still over a 7 but I've lost the hat now I think.... That is sad.

Richard, I'm guessing you really love this shot as I've not seen you post so much on a single submission before.

A year ago I'd not put too much store on a score until 100 votes had passed, these days its more like 50. Am pretty sure your wise enough not to put any store on your score after 10 votes. I've stopped beating myself up by watching every 3 or 4 vote on an entry ending up in the mid 6's. And, a 6.68 is still a score that will be in the top 25 (ok, so your a ribbon junky).

That said, I do agree with you that its better to see your score climb to its final score than drop to it :(

Not really. While I entered the one I preferred over others I'm sure would have done better I'm just baffled by the path in which these scores finish at. It's always the same. I get just about all of my 7s, 8s, 9s and 10s during the first 50-70 votes then all my lower votes in the next 50-70 votes. It's like these people always schedule a time together to vote. I would expect a little more randomness, a little more mixing of high and low votes but that just isn't the case.

I've only ever shot over 6 once before, although I had a quiet period of no challenges for well more than a year, during which time I read a lot of photography, and think I must have improved.
So, although I don't think my post processing is the best possible, I'm well on track to a PB, and to stay till the next round in the 'above average' side challenge.

Life is good!

Because I don't score as high as you do...::sniffle::...I don't get such large drops. It's painful to see how yours moved but still a good score nonetheless. It always feels like we've put our children out there in a the form of a photo somehow...doesn't it?

However, I too have noticed a schedule to the voting. Middle of the week voters are generally the worst. Weekend voters are usually higher for me. And for some reason if I post in the forums, I can guarantee my score will DROP within the hour. Does anyone else experience that? (Not this time though...shhh...I'm traveling very schlumpy and incognito...;-)...) As this particular challenge will end in the middle of the week, I expect my score to drop by rollover. But, we will see.

Not to worry though about yours...independent of the score, you don't need me or anyone to tell you that your work establishes quite well your deep sense of artistry.

Gosh...I do believe I'm rambling...my apologies...

Back to scores...mine is still a 6.4....;-)

Indeed Sinky! I just enjoyed browsing thru your photos, and I'm not surprised that you are heading for a 6.7 personal best! Congratulations, and GOOD LUCK!

And Mae, I have definitely experienced "that" (scores dropping the more I post them). I have found that if I have a mediocre score, the scores generally come up on about Day 4 or 5. But if I have a really good score, they seem to drop all week.

I had a score over 7 for a good part of the first day. . .but alas. ..like Yanko. ..I have sunk into the "also ran" range. Sigh. But that's okay, because when I woke up on Friday, I had a feeling I might be reeeeeally disappointed. So even an "also-ran" score will make me happy if it beats my average and shows well :)

And DEB! WOO HOOOOO!!!!! I told you that you ROCKED!!! :)

What most people forget is that when you have a high score (7 or 8) then you need to get at least an 8 to help your score....anything lower than an 8 will drop your score. So the people who only vote between a 1 or a 7 obviously believe that all the images on this site are not worthy of being a 10 image....so why bother having a 1 to 10 voting range.

10 is equal to a top image for this site...not necessarily a perfect image....and a 1 would be equivalent of an image that is bottom of the range for this site.

People need to realise that different sites have different voting ranges....they might vote an image as a 7, which in there terms would equate to a top of the range image.....but do they realise that there 7 vote is actually dropping the overall score of their chosen image.

LOL!! I'm thinkin' in this crowd where people are worried about hanging on to a 7, that a 6.0 that crosses back into 5.9 periodically doesn't exactly "rock", but it's not a score I'll complain violently about. Some of us just have different (lower) levels of "good", I guess!

This one has been rising steadily (what a novel notion) and is easily my best effort in a long time. And all those comments...wow.

Lots of comments early on is a good thing, because it means people generally like your shot. :) Steadily rising score is also good. I have noticed that if a score is much below 6.3 after a couple of days, it will probably slump mid-week. If it starts around 6.5 or higher, it can tend to creep upward, and it's really nice to watch. I've only had a few of those. :) I'm sitting borderline this month, and yep, so far it's stayed pretty level, with a very slight upward creep. Here's hoping it continues.

Its been the opposite for me. It started high 7+ and it has slowly continued to slip to 6.5. Hopefully it turns around the rest of the week.

Well said! And I agree. Its frustrating to hear when someone only gives their top rated photos a 7, rarely more. For this site -- if a photo is worthy of someone's highest rated score -- then it should be scored a 10 or a 9.

This is the most logical and highly reasoned view on voting that I have read here. Well done, Judi! To put a finer point on it, if a voter thinks a photo should end with a score of "7", then they would have to vote it an "8".
