My Free Study is well above my average. I should have no problems making it to week #2. :D

My Lawn is....well...I'm out after the first round. Thanks for letting me play, it was fun.

I'll definitely be out of the tourney after week 1. I needed a 5.3+ but I'm running a 4.8 in the Free Study challenge. Why did I enter the soft, murky image instead of the bright, colorful one?

Because that's the one you liked better. Go with it ... the voters are cretins. They wouldn't know a good picture if it hit them over the head. :>P

Except for mine, of course. Which is hanging around 6, a good .5 above my average so *fingers crossed* that it holds to put me into week 2.

Phew. The last vote received put my FS over my average. Just, by a whisker. SO, here's hoping it continues. It's gone from 4.00 this morning to 5.558 this evening. It's been a long day.

My free study is doing much worse than I thought it would... but my lawn is still very high. I guess I'll be here next week.
08/01/2008 01:04:24 PM · #382
well my free study is up and down like crazy ... went up .3 tenths ... then back down to it's starting place ... still slightly over my average, but sure not what I had hoped from this shot ... keeping my fingers crossed that I'll still be around for next week ...

same here ... shot up from 6.0 to 6.15 in two votes, hung around there for a few votes, then shot back down to 6.02 in three quick votes. At least I still have a cushion!

My cushion is evaporating at an alarming rate ... now I'm barely .04 over my average ... at one point I was .38 over my average ... oh well, it is what it is!

Wow. Blasted in Free Study. I'm not super-surprised, but I did think it had a shot. The good news is I don't have to worry if Fallen will score above a 6.4. :)
08/01/2008 02:50:58 PM · #386
My cushion is pretty good right now, my Free Study score is a full 1.4 points above my current average. :o)
08/01/2008 03:55:52 PM · #387
My Lawn entry is doing well, almost 0.4 above my average so I guess I can start preparing my week 2 shot...

That should keep you #1 in the FSM Alain! I'm currently .6 above my average - and thanks for your comment on my **** shot ;)

According to Dennis and his spreadsheet my average to beat is 5.7768

Lawn 5.7762
FS 6.4182

Boy am I glad week one had a FS in it lol

*ETA*
Can we have clarification of where the WK2 average to beat comes from? I'm asleep at rollover so never know what the end of challenge does to my overall average.

As with just about every other challenge, we each of us decide what the terms of the challenge description mean.
The origin of the term still life is in art. The essential reason for painting a still life, as opposed to a landscape, a portrait or a representation of architecture, was the freedom available to the artist to arrange the objects that were to be pictured. While it's not a definition, I would look for the use of objects as pictorial elements within a composition to identify a successful still life.

(emphasis is mine, not raish's)

Oddly, I did not look up a definition, but this is a wonderful description of what I had in mind whle going through the Still Life shots - and was blown away by the number of portraits, landscapes, and depictions of architecture. Seriously, how are any of those a still life?

And yet mine - an arrangement of inanimate objects is now scoring below 5. *sigh*

At least you realised yours was soft and murky. Mine looks colorful and very contrasty to me (I was even concerned I had gone overboard on the levels) and my one comment calls it "flat and gray". I have definitely lost whatever "touch" I had. My entries since my move have been (nearly)4.4, 4.8, and 4.9. My 2 current entries each have 1 comment.

But I was correct that my Still Life would do better than my FS - just not better than my average. Oh, well.

I'm thinking of readjusting my votes based on this. There are a lot of shots that just don't seem to be what I would consider a still life. I'm not sure if straight flower pictures really count as still life either.

In my mind a still life is a collection of objects which might somehow relate to each other, and is usually arranged with some sort of artistic intention by the painter or photographer. Like the classic bowl of fruit.

Oh well I'm probably out of the tournament with my arranged, intentional shot (that isn't very artistic)

I am probably out of this one. I entered 'Lawn' and shot something that could not be mistaken, but it's tankin' at 5.15. So I will be sitting on the sidelines cheering those that move on.

Congrats!

Well, that was disappointing. Back down it has gone, so I guess I am going to be out this week too.

my roller coaster ride continues ... started over my average and went up to 5.60xx ... then down to 5.32xx last night ... now sitting at 5.411 ... just ever so slightly under my average ... come on voters, it's not that bad!
08/02/2008 09:24:09 AM · #396
FS is up to 5.235. Still a tiny chance it will get to 5.5 and keep me alive here ;-) At least it's going in the right direction.

I'm in for Fallen, in case I need it. Well, a shot sort of fell in front of me, so to speak, so I had to shoot it!
08/02/2008 05:28:27 PM · #397
Difficult choice for this week. Three entries, but which to choose? I toke the one I most liked, the voters decided otherwise. Nice to be here, see you in a next challenge.
08/02/2008 06:00:22 PM · #398

Well I'm 0.3048 points below mt average after 137 votes. I doubt I'll survive the first round here. Oh well.
08/02/2008 06:16:20 PM · #399
I'll be around for week2, my current pick for Morning should get me through but hope to shoot something for Fallen tomorrow.
08/02/2008 07:11:15 PM · #400
Well I'm about .4 above my dismal average, I was hoping for better, but I guess that's what I get for starting off with a FS.. on the plus side I'll likely make it to round 2... and I hope so cause my Fallen entry is pretty good (if I do say so my self... not that I have any delusions about what my score will likely end up on the challenge)
