Very discouraging as I did work hard at this challenge. Still Life is so out of the box for me. I'm not a lighting genius. It took me until the next to last day to even come up with what I felt was a cool idea. It took me several hours to get my shot to come out close to what it looked like in my head. In the end I was pleased, though basic editing prevented me from tweaking a bit here and there as I wanted to.
My guess is that I will not survive round one here. :( |
My situation also. I am currently 0.3629 below my average and I honestly don't think it deserves such a low score. I wonder if the nature of this tournament isn't for people to vote/rate lower than they might otherwise. I'm not sure I'll be in next week either. |
This isn't the only side tourney/challenge going on. There are tournaments going on all the time so even if there are people voting dishonestly you wouldn't just now notice a drop in score.
FWIW, I've voted on 66% of the entries in Still Life and so far I'm very disappointed. Many don't seem to know what a still life is or just shot it poorly and the ones that did shoot it well 90% seem to rely on just duplicating old shots to the tee. Although my vote cast in this one is 5.01 I haven't given out anything lower than a 4. Because of those reasons above very few are getting anything above a 6.

How would you differentiate a still life from something else? Because I think I agree that many of these aren't what I might consider a still life.
For me I've been voting between 4 and 8 with the majority of 5's |

I sure hope no one is voting lower because of this side challenge -- and I highly doubt they are. We're all just competing against ourselves here, and trying to improve our scores. Since the voter doesn't know the photographer or their average, there is no way for them to know how low they would have to go to hurt someone's chances in this tourney. So the only answer is to give everyone a 3 or less, and I trust the vote scrubber to take care of those trolls!
Congrats to all those on their way to a week 1 survival, and good luck to the nail biters out there. I'm itching to play -- I don't have anything in the regular challenges this week, and missing my update button. just waiting for rollover with fingers crossed for a better than average score in the free study so i can play next week, since I've got good ideas and some shots already for both Fallen and the Morning/Evening set! |

Just another of my silly questions, but why did you decide that Free Study was in the first weeks round of scoring.
I would seem to me that it fit better as the first option for week 2.

Probably because voting starts tomorrow so falls in week one?

Because I didn't have anything to enter for the first two challenges this week. :>P
jk. What Andi said. Originally posted by Ecce Signum: Probably because voting starts tomorrow so falls in week one? |
If it would've fallen on a Saturday we would have moved it to the following week.

Well I like to see some sense of arrangement by the photographer that is with the objects themselves and/or the lighting. At the very least convey the stillness. Using a fast shutter to freeze motion is not enough to convey stillness. That is just the bare minimum. You need to do more in the composition and in your choices in subject matter. I should get some sense of a passage of time with the object remaining still so high shutter speeds freezing the motion of a moving train need not apply. Hopefully nobody actually shot a train. I'm just using that as an example and not trying to single anybody out. I've still got more to vote on so maybe I'm just missing the good ones.

As with just about every other challenge, we each of us decide what the terms of the challenge description mean.
The origin of the term still life is in art. The essential reason for painting a still life, as opposed to a landscape, a portrait or a representation of architecture, was the freedom available to the artist to arrange the objects that were to be pictured. While it's not a definition, I would look for the use of objects as pictorial elements within a composition to identify a successful still life. |

A cry into the void: I entered a photo in the Free Study and now I'm increasingly sorry. It's bad enough when I really like the photo and then watch it crash 'n burn. This time I'm so aware of its flaws (truly) that its strengths (if any) seem pretty weak. Ok, enough pre-challenge whining. File it under "Who cares but me?" I'm not starting over with 90 minutes to go. And hey, if nothing else, it could lower my overall average for the next BTAST (better-than-average-side-tourney). :-D

Is next week's challenge morning and evening? Or is next week's the ones that are announced on Sunday? (monday?)

I'm in for Free Style. VERY last minute, but love my shot. Pretty comfortable that it'll at least beat my ave. 5.07. |

I'm in for the Free Study.....The way I figure is that with all the entries all I need is one vote for a 6 and I'll beat my avg. Just opened and I get a 4. Oh well :( |

At the rate I am going, I will not come near my average, but also at the rate I have been going, my average by this time next year should put me in a pretty good spot to win it all. That is providing I suddenly acquire talent. (Can I get that on my MasterCard?)

I'm looking at a possible personal top 5 in Still Life. Sure am glad I said so at the last minute, since after 4 votes in FS I'm at 4.0. :)

I will be submitting to one of the basic challenges next week, either Morning II or Evening, for this side challenge. I will not be submitting to Fallen. Good luck everyone! |

Uh, oh: FS is at 5.0, Lawn is at 6.0. It's gonna' be a tough hill to climb if my FS is gonna' keep me in this side challenge! Looks like I chose wrong. And looks like my overall 5.5 is going to stay put this week. Kinda' funny how it's working out. |

My free study is less than .03 under my average. yeesh.
3 votes later, I'm .2 below. Probably will not recover (seldom does). Gonna be a long week. hahah
