This image of a huge puppy submerged in a water dish on a beastly hot day received 24 scores of 3 and below. I am a little shocked at that, since at least on the technicals it was not in the running for brown. I shot it specifically for the challenge.
Do you suppose these folks all decided that it DNMC? None of them left comments. Lots of 4s too, but that doesn't bother me. Do you suppose it's that OMG another pet shoehorned into a challenge thing? Or OMG it's another-pet-PERIOD? Hard around here for an animal photographer sometimes. ;-) |

Beats me. I thought it was great and it certainly looked like it was taken specially for the challenge. That score is WAY too low as far as I'm concerned.

Thanks and thanks BAMartin for the nice comment, I'm not at all concerned with the score it got overall, them's the breaks. Just the super low end ones when it's not blurry or inappropriate subject matter or poorly composed or... |

I thought it was just lovely and so appropriate....so much so it was a "favourite" of mine. Hard to tell what will appeal to some and what wont. |

44 votes 3 or less
Light bulbs (hot, duh), geometric symmetry, pleasing gradient in the background.
Spitting distance to last place. Sometimes you just can't tell. |

Thanks, DarkRider, your poor boy. So glad he's got you now.
violinist123, I guess you needed to blow the highlights to gain the attention of the speed voters! That's a gnarly total of 3 and under. Hey, that's an interesting statistic, I wonder who has gotten the most ever of those while apparently meeting the challenge? Judgement call, since part of that is the composition. |

There seems to be some people who go around sprinkling low scores around. Seems also that participants who vote have a tendency to vote lower on the high scoring photos, and vote higher on the lower scoring photos. I've seen a lot of low numbers go to some pretty good photos. The hot challenge winner got 8 three or below votes.
I also would not vote a 3 on a photo that DNMC. Personally I score 0-3 pts on meeting the challenge, 0-3 pts on technical, 0-3 pts on creativity and compositiong, and 0-1 pt on whether I personally like the picture. So a fabulous picture that DNMC could still get a 7 from me.
I got 21 3 or below in weathered and nary a single comment.
If I leave a 1 or 2 or a 9 or 10, I always leave a comment.
But the voters are the voters, and they get to do whatever they want. |

I haven't checked every photo in the challenge - didn't vote in it, but from what I have seen there was a truly inordinate number of such low scores in this challenge. I might chalk it up to visual and conceptual limitations in interpreting the challenge, but I am not entirely convinced that is all. |

In my case my low score, I believe, is due to one of two things. Either there is a grand conspiracy to keep me from getting the blue, or a general lack of talent on my part. I really hope it is the former, but suspect that against all hope it may be the latter. |

I think it's pretty decent. It didn't come up for me in voting, but I would have given it a 5. It doesn't jump out at me, but it's good and certainly conveys the subject. It came in way above my own picture of a sweating warthog. |

I was so busy being taken by lynnesite's pup - reminding me of all my dad's silly boxers - I didn't twig to his being a bull mastiff. You don't often see them, and they are so big, so here's a picture that's been waiting for an occasion:

Max is adorable. He sure looks healthy and happy now!
I've seen low scores before but not in this number, interesting to hear of it happening to others on this challenge! I've never groused about scores in my own thread before in 120 challenges, but this really got my goat. Thank you for the additional viewpoints, it's much appreciated. |

Stay awhile. It's comfy down here. I'd offer you a seat, but all our furniture was taken for use in the cardboard box challenge. |

i voted a 5 on it. the picture didnt really grab me but i did think your puppy had a really cute expression.
for the 3's or less, they should at least leave some kind of comment.
on my still life entry, i must have at least 40+ 3's or lower and not one critical comment *shrugs* |

Lynne, You know I'm such a big fan of your horse photography. You are one of my absolute favorites! The most wonderful feature of your dog photo...IMHO...are his beautiful eyes. However, if I were to look at this photo without the title, I would not have a clue the photo was about "hot"...I think you have a case here where the weather you and your beautiful puppy are feeling is not clearly portrayed to us who are not on location with you. To me...this photo depicts a beautiful dog enjoying a bowl of water. You'll have to hit me harder over the head with the topic...right between the eyes, please!
But, no matter what and even though I haven't voted in a very long time, I would always give one of your horse photos a 10+...no matter what the challenge topic.
Just my two cents...;-)
Edit: I never learned to spell...;-/

I was really touched by this thread, and in particular, the comment by "hihosilver". I usually have no sympathy for those , who in my opinion, are trying to shoehorn an entry into a challenge. But, because you called to our attention the meaning behind your photo and why you felt it met the challenge, it had an effect on me. I totally agree with "hihosilver" and would have never realized you were referring to the temperature. I would just add that with the number of entries for the challenges, we do not have the time to spend 30 minutes trying to decipher the meaning behind each photo before voting. |

Perhaps the dog was not sweating heavily enough to convey "hot"? I'll be happy to come over and give him lessons...

Yep, my question was not at all about the final score, just about all those 3s and below. Never have experienced such a thing despite some other low scoring (sub 5) entries overall. If I didn't hit the challenge theme on the mark, I'd expect 4s but not 1s and 2s if the technical are OK.
I'm not a fan of shoehorned entries via clever title either. I thought the pup's rolled eyes also conveyed fatigue, in any case thanks for all the feedback. |

Honestly, the scores are in a normal bell curve, centered around your average. Some high scores, some low scores, nothing really to worry about.
I liked the image, and have to wonder at the 3's, but I also have to wonder about the 9's and 10's, because it wasn't really *that* good, at least to me....

Totally agree Ann and whilst I didn't vote it would have been aq 5 from me.
