Was wondering what type of settings do you use to shoot?
I've found standard with saturation +1, and a couple of nitches up the contrast scale to work well in many of my shots. Ken rockwell says choose vivid and up saturation to the max, I think thats a bit ridiculous, unless you really want over sated stuff.

Anyway, i know this depends on the situation, but for normal day to day use, or candids, snap shots etc
what do you use?

I use standard settings with regards to saturation, sharpening, etc, but I shoot RAW so it really doesn't matter...

I shoot RAW+JPEG, and I set it to vivid. I usually use the RAW, so vivid doesn't really matter, but in many cases the JPEG is just as I'd want it.

In fact, from Lightroom 2 at least, I find it hard to match the Nikon processing in the JPEG in many cases. Sure, I can up vibrance and saturation, but it comes off unnatural compared to the built in processing. So try it, you might like it! (Though if you are doing that, I still recommend you shoot RAW+JPEG, and get the best of both worlds.)

Although I have a D80 and not a D300. :)

I dont like Vivid... I set it sometimes to vivid if I am doing outdoors stuff, but for people vivid looks bad.

I usually shoot RAW, so it doesn't much matter, but...

I found that if I'm not going to do any editing at all, vivid is probably the best bet on everything that doesn't have people in it. If it has people in it, standard is much better. People tend to look like beets otherwise.

If I'm going to do any editing, standard with saturation +2 seems to be better. Vivid sets the contrast way high, and I lose detail in the dark areas that I may want to keep later.

I actually shot a color chart with my camera at the jpeg settings I liked, then went into lightroom and set up camera calibration settings to match the jpegs I got. It was a pain to do, but it comes in handy when I'm shooting raw.

Yes, I didn't mention that I don't shoot many people pics, and you're right--when I've shot them in vivid, they don't look good. But then you always have the RAW when shooting RAW+JPEG.

But flowers and landscapes rock in vivid. :)

Hi, Neil. I just read this on Luminous Landscape. It may help you to get that same look from Lightroom.

That's great! I think I can stop shooting RAW+JPEG! Another good reason to buy the LR 2 upgrade.

Thanks.

I use "Portrait"
Auto sharpening
saturation "0"
D-lighting low.
Shoot RAW
auto wb most of the time.
