Maybe it's in the wrong challenge? I know people have done that before - in this case that would mean putting a Lawn shot in Still Life or vice versa.
Or maybe many of the voters so fare think it doesn't meet the challege? There are a few in Still Life that I don't think fit that category at all - they are landscapes or architectural shots to me. |

Hi. First, welcome to DPC!
Second, yes, it's a tough crowd. Whether that works for you depends on you. Many people come to DPC (including me) thinking "I know how to take pictures and my friends/family love my shots," and then get hammered by low scores.
But if you take the scores and the comments as a learning experience, it can be a great thing.
I'd recommend that your focus be on improving your ability to capture what you want to do, as opposed to specifically looking at scores. That is, learn to use the camera as a tool. Then you can decide whether you want to shoot what scores well here.
Some people's vision aligns with what's popular, so if they can nail the technical end, their scores are high. Nothing wrong with that.
Other people's vision doesn't align with what's popular. But if they still produce strong images, they develop a following despite getting low scores. Again, nothing wrong with that.
For me, I go back and forth. Sometimes I have an image I just want to share and get feedback on, and I know going in it'll be a low score. And sometimes I go for something I'm pretty sure will score well. Sometimes I'm surprised, but it's rare.
Another thing to know is that people here expect good processing. You don't have to be perfect, but if you leave a mess in a shot when you could've cleaned it up, people will score your shots lower.
One last point: scores here are normally well below what the same image gets on other sites. On some sites where I've participated, it's as much as 1.5 points lower here. But I keep coming back because the feedback is honest and usually helpful.
After the challenge is over, post it in the forums and ask for comments. Be clear in your language that you're not complaining, but rather asking for helpful feedback. I've never failed to get great information that way.

The problem I am running into is low scores AND very few comments with little or no guidance on how the shot could have been better. What the heck do I make of that? The current still life I have 42 votes averaging like 4.8 with 1 comment from someone who pointed out a technical "issue" when it was a purposeful inclusion to set a certain tone or help to "tell the story". Over 2.5 challenges I have recieved only like 6 comments total.

Post some of the shots and ask for feedback in a separate thread. You'll get some. |

I don't mind a low scores, as long as people comment and tell me how they think I could've done better.
Low scores motivate me. |

That is the best way. Until the site adds an option that lets the voter know that the owner of particular entry is wanting honest feedback most will not give negative feedback in fear of getting attacked for it afterwards. Why waste your time on someone who just wants glowing feedback only, which is often the case?
I've been voting in the still life challenge and have found most of the entries to be very disappointing. Main reason being they are not still life or they are but are so incredibly cliche AND no twist/spin was added making the shot their own, that I want to vommit. Just upload the photo you copied and save us both time. I understand it's a learning site but you CAN learn a technique AND still offer something new at the same time. They are not mutually exclusive.

Out of curiosity what would you consider to be a true still life as opposed to not a still life? |

I did do mine with a twist...I have never seen my particular entry before, so I thought I had something a little unique...obviously the scorers don't think so. Hopefully they can enlighten me where my image has been done before!
