I'm working this weekend with a photographer taking secondary pics and she said i need to set the Contrast, Sharpening and saturation settings to 0, and set the camera to adobe 98'. I went through all of the menu settings in the camera and could not seem to find these settings anywhere. Am I missing something, or are these settings not available for change on the D80?

HELP PLEASE.

Shooting JPG, I assume?

Menu -> Shooting Menu -> Optimize Image -> Custom
Then select each attribute as specified.

It might be worth confirming if they mean actual "zero" or "none," as those are different values (as ye' old computer science analogy of zero and null).

The Canon Rebel XTi does not show all the menu options unless the camera is set to user controlled f-stop, shutter speed, etc. Is it possible the D80 is the same and you have it in an "automatic" mode?

Ah, a fair point as well. The "Optimize Image" menu item will be visible (but not selectable) if you are in an auto or digiprogram (whatever they call it) mode. Who uses auto modes? ;)

Also worth pointing out that you can turn off those features from even showing up in your menu if you are using a custom menu. So, be sure you either have them enabled in your custom menu, or turn on the "full menu" option from the CSM menu.

cdrice will it make a difference if i'm shooting in RAW rather than JPG. because this lady told me we're shooting in RAW but these settings had to be changed.. something to do with editing later on.

Those settings will make no difference in the *image data* of the raw .nef files, but they *will* effect the camera-generated preview that is tagged on the .nef file.

So, it depends on their workflow and what software they are using. My personal workflow via Lightroom, those settings wouldn't make any difference at all, since I regenerate my previews based on the raw image data and my own settings; I discard the camera-generated preview tagged in the .nef file.

Their workflow might be different and actually require them do "something" with those camera-generated previews. I kinda doubt it, though... :P

You won't be able to tell a difference in terms of using the camera. Those settings have no effect on exposure, etc. You *might* tell a *slight* difference in your lcd preview, if you zoom in, etc., but overall you won't be able to tell anything has changed.
