OK, I am toying with the idea of converting my RAWs (lots of them) to DNG format.
Obviously the thought of having a future proof format (or so we are told) is appealing and I heard that 20% less space is required on the HDD(?)
Does anybody here swear by DNG? or can anyone possibly suggest why it would be a bad idea.
Thanks

| DNG is Adobe proprietary intellectual property, as far as I am aware. I trust Adobe as little as I trust Microsoft. I think it very unlikely that CR2 Canon Raw 2 will be left high and dry without converters in the future. But I think that Adobe has every reason to hype DNG. IMO probably not worth the effort of converting those many thousands of CR2 files you have. |

It is *not* a proprietary format, Adobe is proposing it as an ISO standard, meaning it is completely open. That still doesn't mean that it will gain acceptance, and so it's value as "future-proofing" is nebulous at this point.
Should the RAW format ever begin to fall out of favor, it's highly likely you'll recognize this and be able to make a decision on conversion at that point. I don't think the saved drive space is that big a deal, with storage costs dropping as they are.
Edit to add: Also remember that DNG files are not valid originals for challenge entries, unless your camera writes them natively.

| As Kirbic said, "Adobe is submitting DNG to ISO for standardization." But presumably initiated by Adobe and until it is released into the wild is still Adobe's rights. |

Top advice.. I'll steer clear for now..
Kirbic, cheers for the heads up regarding DNGs not valid for submission validations. Didn't even cross my mind. |

If you do, remember, to click the "insert Oriiginal RAW File" box before you start! Or you get this!!
