I'm doing a shoot in an alleyway in a couple weeks with a model. My biggest issue, I think, will be getting good lighting--since I don't know the area well enough to gauge the light, I'm wondering what you all think. What's the best portrait lighting kit for your buck? I'm a poor photographer, so money is an issue. Any ideas outside of light kits, either. Something relatively portable. I know nothing about this because I'm just getting into portraits.

Any and all advice will be appreciated, thank you!

DIY light reflector or wear a white T-shirt

Also if you already have an alleyway in mind for the shoot, try to check out the light at different times during the day.

Problem with visiting there ahead of time is that we'd have to drive around and find one suitable, and I'm not in that city at the moment. =/

Thanks for the links! I'll try to make reflectors out of cardboard, any other suggestions?

I went to the local art supply stores in my area and asked if they had any damaged white foamcore sheets that they would want to get rid of. Turns out one store had two 40inx60in sheets that they sold me for 10 bucks. I'm now looking for black ones. What I did was I cut them in half and taped them together again so they can be folded for portability.
