A quick query...

I shoot in RAW & jpg. If requested by the SC for the original file for validation, is it sufficient to send the jpg (even if it was the RAW I edited). Or do I need to send the RAW file?

Thanks!

You need to send the original unedited RAW file (if you shot it in RAW) or JPG (if you shot it in JPG) - This is the original file from the memory card, unedited and unmodified by any file transfer software.

eta: Just read your post properly. Send whichever file you actually used in your workflow. If you used the RAW, then send that.

Send the RAW file since that is the one you edited.

Thanks. That's what I thought. It's just that a 12Meg file may take a while to upload!

I am pretty sure if you shot RAW + JPEG you CAN send in the jpeg. It will contain the same EXIF that the raw does expcept file type. You might want to wait for an SC to chime in or send in a ticket to get the answer.

But there are editing functions which can be performed on the RAW (e.g. exposure, color balance) which won't have the same results as on the JPG version.

Frankly imo, submitting the JPEG portion of a RAW+JPEG "should" be perfectly fine as I very much doubt the SC would rely on any of the small changes that can be done to RAW files to decide to DQ or not. I very much doubt they will say, hmm, this shade of red looks wrong, it must have been a RAW file! They are looking for dates, illegal editing, adding items, removing features.

Then again, this is my very logical opinion of the situation and rules are often not always logical but rather safe. So, while to me it would seem fine to submit the JPEG instead of the RAW, it very possibly will NOT seem fine to the SC.

That's what I wondered, as the JPG and RAW are shot at the same time and contain the same EXIF data then they would both count as valid originals.

Doesn't matter to me much now as I've uploaded the RAW file.

If I took a very dark shot and increased the exposure in RAW editing I could reveal objects/features which would remain hidden if I'd adjusted levels on the JPG version of the file. So if I submit the JPG as proof, and SC are unable to make objects/features appear by following my steps, then it could be misinterpreted as illegal editing.

Ding, ding, ding! Winner of the best answer award! :-D

p.s. - JPG should be just fine IMO.

JPG file off RAW+JPG is definitely ok. It's been answered before in other threads.

I disagree.

Here's a slightly :) overexposed photo I took this afternoon. Shot in RAW+JPG. My editing steps were to decrease the exposure in my RAW editor and save as JPG.

Here's the out-of-camera JPG;

So, if I were to submit the above JPG to SC as proof of my entry, how would they recreate the house I made appear by editing the RAW file? Feel free to try it yourself.
