Back in the day, if a wooden 2' diameter cable spool was just sitting around doing nothing, I would take off the center core, leaving me with two "rings" from each end.
These rings would then be drilled, wired,and globed. C stands or other hard ware would hold the monster around the lens of a Panavision or Arri camera system.
Viola, a home made ring light was born.
Today, there are many other options at someones disposal. LED, fluorescent, miniaturization, Milli-amp power sources, ect..
