When my work rolled out their brand new HP laptops they had "issues" straight out of the box from HP. The worst was the spontaneous reboot. They'd do it seemingly at random times. Mine rebooted itself 12 times in one 8 hr day. Others were worse. After about 2 weeks, they fixed the issue, but those laptops were absolute crap. I was always careful with mine, but over it's 2yr lease, I had 4 HD's, 2 keyboards, 3 motherboards and 2 displays replaced.

Well I would never let you borrow mine then with all that bad luck you have.

Unfortunately, mine was far from atypical.

Dirt_diver....some great ideas and information...thanks. It really is a great laptop, I love the huge 17" screen, the remote and s-video out port has been handy, and it has a second HD port...pretty rare among laptops I've seen. It worked perfect for the year I was in Okinawa but as soon as I got it home it started going crazy.

I'm certain a new HD would fix it and since I have a spare sitting around I'm going to try and load an OS on it when I actually get a day off work. A coworker told me to download a version of Linux and see if I can install it on the original hard drive, he said it just might fix what is wrong (I have hooked the original HD up to a converter kit and via my desktop I can see all the data on it but just can't get it to boot in the laptop). So I have options along with your ideas.

If you made a recovery disk, try using that. You may also be able to order the system (re)install disks from HP at a nominal cost--sometimes you get that option when you buy the system.

help...augh this is killing me. I have a recovery CD and a new hard drive but can't seem to get the CD to load anything. It goes into the recovery software but then says it can't find an OS...well DUH dang it, you're supposed to load one!

Does anyone have a clue as to the best way to do this? (other than buying a new OS and loading it.)

Thank you in advance.

A recovery CD does not contain an OS. All it does is copy over the system files that already exist. You need to have an CD to load an OS.

Most laptops from HP and other sources actually have 2 partitions in the HD. One has the recovery setup on it(this is what helped you make the disk. The other has the OS and all the other stuff that you load. You dont have an OS on your recovery disk. You will need to load an OS and then use your recovery disk to load all the Extras(crap) that was preloaded and also likely the drivers for the touchpad, monitor, USB ports and such. At this point you need an OS drivers disk(most can be downloaded off the manufacturers site) unless you really want to load the preloaded software that came with it.

Scott did you get an OS CD? If not I can mail you one

I have nothing but good to say about every HP unit I've had, both PC and notebook, their tech support has always been helpful and knowledgeable, and I won't use anything but HP.

I have a 3210 All-in-One printer, the cheapest one with separate ink cartridges, and it's AWESOME!!!! I have run something like 2000+ prints through it and it still works beautifully.

I've also been pretty pleased with the Norton products I've used over the years and always had great results with the Symantec people on the rare occasions I contacted them

Their live update service I had was awesome.

Anyhow....just my $0.02 US......I know we all have issues with different companies, but before this well got totally poisoned, I just wanted to say that I got no beef with HP at all.......other companies I do, but not HP.

No I didn't, I was actually about to purchase a recovery CD from HP (only $15) when I saw you and Matt's post...guess I won't be doing that since it doesn't have an OS on it. Stupid way to do things but great if you need to make money I guess.

Matt....yeah the hd is partitioned off but since the computer won't read/boot it the recovery section won't do anything. I've had it in the system and booted using the F11 like they say and nothing happens, so I tried the cd and still nothing. When I have it hooked to my other computer I can see all files but don't know what to do to get it bootable again.

In order to get it to boot you would have to be an expert and know what you were doing. Even then unless you trained to do it you will not be able to get the bad drive to boot. Just be glad that you can see files. If there is anything on there you want I would pull it off and save it. Other wise just trash the drive, there is no other reasons to keep it unless you want to pull it apart and save the disk.

Look online and see if you can download a copy of an OS. Matt was saying that you can but I don't know if you can download an actual OS. I know you can download the updates but the actual OS... not sure.
Other than that you have a few options here.

1. Go to the store and buy a copy of XP or Vista. XP might be a little hard to find because Microsoft stopped making it but some places still have it. Circuit City still has it I think.

2. Borrow an OS CD from a friend. Make sure that you look on the bottom of you laptop and look for the reg. key. On there it will say windows XP or Vista. Make sure you get the same CD (unless you bought a new OS CD) that way you can just install the CD and you already have a key that will activate windows.

3. I have a copy of Windows XP SP1 that you can load on your laptop and then you will have to install the updates and all the service packs.

4. Sell that thing and get you a new one.

Should you need more help I'm sure myself or matt or even anyone else on here will help ya out. If you have questions just ask. I'm usually always online in one way or another. Shoot me an email if you need me

What I was referring to him downloading off the manufacturers website is the drivers. The OS will come from MS and will have to be on a disk. If you had XP, then your Product key on the bottom of the laptop will validate your install with MS and then do your updates. I'd personally see if a friend had a OS disk you could load, download the drivers from the HP site, install them, do all your updates, then as suggested Ebay that sucker and get yourself a nice new one.............might I suggest someone besides HP. :D

Matt

BTW dont expect any help from me for the next two days, I'm traveling back home from vacation and likely wont have net access until sunday sometime.

again, thanks for the help Matt and Joseph, I'm sure I can find someone here with a version of OS (didn't know about reg key on bottom of laptop...thanks) and I will load it on another hd I have that I know is good. I think I will take the bad one to the Tank Range here at the Marine Corps base and let them use it for target practice...that'd be a cool picture lol.
