I have been shooting with a Sony F828 for 5 years now and figure I have gotten my money out of it. I am thinking of going with the Nikon D300 and I am trying to work out the best way to do it for around 2k to 2.5k.
The most important thing to me for photography is being able to shoot good shots on the race track but I would also like an all round lens and maybe a landscape lens. As far as kits are concerned I have found these 2 so far,
Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX
Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED AF-S DX
AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D
plus a wide angle and a 2x telephoto converter for right on 2k
3 lens kit
Or a VR kit which has
Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX
55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX
plus a wide angle converter this also is right at 2k
VR Kit
Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not familiar with Nikon equipment, but I have heard people here praise the VR lenses. I think the VR route is the way to go. You can pick up the 50/1.8 sometime down the road if desired.
One thought however, based on your comment about shooting at the track. I would think a faster (f2.8) lens might be a consideration for action shooting. The Nikon lenses you've listed are probably ok, but may require a higher ISO to get the shutter speeds up. If shooting at the track is mostly in the mid part of the day and has good lighting then this could be a non-issue. Just food for thought.
Good luck in whatever you decide. :-) |

Those prices sound almost too good to be true.....
I just checked my local stores flyer and they have a D300 + 18-200mm VR lens for $2499 Canadian. That's a $100 off sale price.
I seen that the eBay seller only has a 1 year Nikon USA warranty listed too. Is that what all Nikon US D300s come with??? Mine has 2 years Nikon Canada! Maybe one of our DPC US friends could verify that?
As for most of the extras that are included IMO they look like crap. The Lowepro bag being the only thing of real quality listed. I personally wouldn't touch that memory card or the filters.
I have heard really good things about the 18-200 VR lens. My kit lens with my D70 was the 18-70mm 3.5-4.5. Its a great all around lens and is selling for well under $300 now.
I think you might be able to shop around a bit and build yourself a better quality setup in your price range.

Pyxis Camera appears to be tied in with ShopSunshine and Digital Shopping Network, two classic screw job organizations. I'd be careful dealing with them.

Hope you didn't have to learn that the hard way. |

Nope...Ran the telephone number on the ebay ad through my work DB and it goes back to ShopSunshine.
Also, if you google the number you get this link, about a third of the way down you get to a long series of emails. The number in one of the emails for contacting Shopsunshine is the same as the ebay ad.
I'd say one and the same.
So, assuming this wasn't just an attempt to push ebay ads. Monaro, I'd suggest staying away from these guys. Looks like they have an entire staff to counter all the complaints that pop up on reseller ratings etc....

so more shopping and more searching on retailers reputation I have found these guys and feedback seems good
Cameta Camera
I dont think I can beat the price for the D300 with the following 2 lens, my question is do you think this is a good starting package as far as lens? Am I really missing anything from the 55 - 70 range? Would a 18 to 135 be better?
# Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR AF-S DX Nikkor Lens
# Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor Lens
Any feedback appreciated. I think im getting close to pulling the trigger.

| Check out //www.resellerratings.com on any online store before you buy. Both Pyxis and Cameta seem to be OK. |
