Ok. I know I am getting annoying. But, we are having my big garage sale this weekend..and I am hoping that I get enough money to put me over the top for either the 40D (with a new lense) or the 5D...I already know everything I need to know about the 40D (one of my good friends recently purchased one..and I got to take pics with it..very awesome camera)

So what is a reasonably priced lense...that is good for portraits with the 5D?
Also...is the kit lense with this camera worth it? Or should I just pocket the difference and buy the lense...that you (hopefully) suggest.

THANKS!

Don't get the kit lens.

And I'de say 85mm 1.8 or if you have the cash, 85mm 1.2

Both of these are mentioned all the time, and with good reason (you can search the forums to find these two lenses mentioned over and over):

Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM

Both of them have really great quality, both focus very quickly (due to USM), and both have a constant f/2.8 aperture. They are very useful for on-the-go portraits and weddings. If you will be in studio, then you might consider getting a prime lens as that will give you better quality (and being in studio, you have much less need for zooming).

I don't know what lens the 40D is shipping with, but if it's the same one that came with the 20D, the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, it's a decent lens ... but way over priced for what you're getting (or at least, it was back when I got mine).

The kit lens (18-55) does not automatically come with this camera.

Ditto on the 85 1.8. For around $300, it is the best bang for hte buck.

They sell 5D bundles with the 24-105 F4L. If that is the kit lens you are talking about, it's no slouch...
