Currently selling an SLR I have (Nikon N75 - selling on eBay under this same userid, if anyone's interested), that I just recently purchased for a photography class at school.. unfortunately, since I'm not an art major, the teacher backed out at the last minute telling us that we couldn't enroll in the class (of course, this was 3 days after he told us to purchase an SLR if we didn't have one and that he would have enough room for us in the class).. anyways, all bitterness aside, I'm also thinking of selling my Olympus C-3000Z and not sure which direction to head..

At first, I was thinking I wanted the Canon EOS-300D, but the price is a definite factor (even though it IS cheap for a digital SLR, still a bit out of my range) for a broke college student. Others that I've looked into are the Olympus C-750UZ, Olympus C-5050Z and Canon Powershot G3. They all appear to be excellent cameras, but was wondering if anybody has any other suggestions (for other cameras to look into), or specific problems that that they've had with these models. The EOS-300D is very tempting, but $900 for body/lens (then I have to consider a large memory card, possible extra lenses, and improvements made in 2nd and 3rd generation digital SLRs, for likely lower costs to the consumer) is a tad steep for me at this point in time.

Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

I'm about to buy a Panasonic FZ10. This is by far the best camera for the money. I may buy a Rebel in the future, but I'm sure I will also continue using the FZ10 alongside it.
A brief rundown:
$600
12* optical zoom.
More than 4 shots a second, depending on card.
Image Stabiliser (VERY important).
4 Megapixels.
Leica lens.
Fully manual control.
Chunky SLR look and feel (a plus to me, a minus to some)

I've looked into a Canon G5, Minolta A1, Sony 828, Nikon 5700 and many others, and this is the camera that rises above the rest for me (except the Rebel, which is out of my price league at the moment... and too inconvenient with the problem of having to swap lenses all the time).

After many months of research and looking I went with the ($650)Olympus C-5050Z and I am very happy with it. It has a midsized body that has a very nice weight to it. 5 megapixels. It has a zoom and wideangle lens that can be used with an adapter, although I wouldn't bother with the zoom. Lots of manual and automatic settings. The ONLY drawback with my choice is the fact that it isnt a SLR type camera. Manual focus is almost impossible with a larger than most 1.8" LCD screen. Nothing beats actually looking through the lens while trying to manually focus, Well, maybe AutoFocus (; .
At the time, the Rebel hadn't been released yet. A buddy of mine said to save my money another couple of months and spend it on the Rebel. Also at the time I was using an Olympus D-340 and felt I just couldn't get the quality I wanted at 1.3MPixels. In hindsight, I wish I would have waited for the Rebel.

Let me know if there is anything in particular about the Olympus you want to know.
