It has been interesting, to say the least, to follow his progress over the last couple of years. I remember when I first joined DPC, mentioning this 15 year old kid to a couple of friends of mine and my son.

This line in the story made me laugh:

"Scared? A little, But Joey quips, 'Trapping yourself on an abandoned island with a cannibal? Priceless.'"

Iâd hate to have a subconscious preference for film because thatâs what weâre used to seeing in bigger work, but I just dig the tonal range a lot more and the entire process. Itâs something Iâd like to experiment and learn more about in the future.â

Time for a 'Joey L - Genius or Fool?' thread.

He certainly does, and presented a workshop at the Calgary GTG. A VERY nice "kid" :)

Congrats Joey.

It really has been fun watching him "grow" in digital photography. I am sure he is someone that will be making heads turn and stare for many many years to come.

Way to go, Joey! I'm starting to think that first post-processing DVD I have of yours is going to become a collector's item! :) It's great to see your awesome work getting some recognition out there. :D

Yeah, I must admit I slightly prefer Joey's grunge method... While the tobacco spit definitely makes for some nice shots, clean-up is a mess! :D

Agreed...

I still wish I had been able to get him down to video tape my wedding. It'd be like having Quentin Tarantino film your wedding. *lol*

BTW, I also saw some Joey art on a youtube video being linked to from Ron Paul's campaign for liberty. Not sure if the use of the image was authorized though. So I sent Joey a message thru his site. Not sure if it gets to him though...

Way to go Joey. I still have the demo you sent to me to give to the Sony rep. Too bad for him they never got back to me. I'll show him the article and see if it changes any mindsets over there. Anyway, again congrats.

Yeah that was a cool article, he was also in AC (After Capture) a while ago. I love being inspired by photographers the same or close in age to me.

Amazing what talent, dedication and hard work can do.

Now if only I had one or two of the three.

I do find his comment about film interesting. I've been shooting purely digital for about 6 years now, and my old Canon A-1 languishes in it's camera bag. I just bought a Canon EOS-40D last week. It's a great camera, and I have not nearly pushed it to it's limits.

However, I look at some of my old Kodachrome slides, and envy the color I used to get. I see some of the medium format pics that are out there, and envy the detail and richness.

Which is not to say that I am tired of digital, or wish i hadn't bought this camera. (I am no where near doing justice to a nice medium format camera.) I love being able to blast away and to see what works and what doesn't almost immediately. If I was buying film I would have to take more notes, and I would do a lot less experimenting. And a lot more insurance shots, hoping I got what I wanted.

But I can see, and agree with Joey L's point. And, I can certainly envy him his talent. Though I must say, that whenever one of us here is successful, it feels enough like family that we can all share a bit.

Good on you Joey L. I visited your site, and your vision is amazing.

Joey has not only the talent, but the drive and focus to succeed. He applies the skills, but keeps his mind on the "big picture." Truly an amazing young man. Go get 'em, Joey!

I would like to know how he gets those nice rich colors on a lot of those portraits on his site. His holy men and women are amazing.
