This is not a rant on the score that I received on the "Anything but Landscape Challenge", I would like to understand what I did wrong that made this shot do so poorly in the challenge.
So, what is your take on this shot?
All input is appreciated. I am trying to see what to do and not to do for next time.
Thanks
Jaime

Clearly, 5.6 is not a bad score, but I understand where you are going - it is not expected.
My thoughts...an unusual and seemingly uncomfortable pose, the stretched neck, the unsymmetrical placement of the necklace, the fact that we can see 'up her nose', the seemingly odd crop at her bustline - all create difficulty to the 5 second viewer.
She's a very pretty model, photographed well - good light, contrast etc. - but I think many including myself have a hard time 'seeing it' in this pose and choice of upside down.
Anyway, those are my thoughts... |

Thanks I really appreciate your honesty. I can see what you are talking about.
And yes a 5.6 for me is a bad score. I have set my standards a bit high for myself, but it's for my own personal growth in photography.
Any other takers?

This is just my theory, but I think it might be most to do with the upside down pose. The human brain is 'programmed' to detect and look at other human faces, noticing everything from the subtle differences that communicate so much, to the major differences that make us all unique and identifiable. We aren't used to looking at faces upside down, hence creating a somewhat uncomfortable and confusing experience.
Once rotated the subject is immediately more attractive, with the focus point immediatley being her eyes. To me, upside down her eyes are lost and no longer a main focal point... |

Part of it may have been the title as well. The photo has very little to do with her eyes -- the focus when you open the thumbnail is her neck and the large stones on the necklace. Voters are simple people and they've read the title expecting eyes. It's a good shot -- but you've had better :-) |
