I wonder if anyone received money for making that rule. |

That is not unique to the Beijing Olympics. Many sports arenas in the US have the same policy.
The issue isn't really with SLRs per se, but along with the SLRs people have brought large lenses, monopods, tripods, other other equipment that block aisles and impede access to to seats and exits.
Thene there's licensing rights by the leagues and teams. The NBA is particularly strict about licensing and images. |

You can't bring DSLR's that you hold to your eye to take pictures because they will block others from viewing but a P&S that is held at arm's length is allowed? WTH? I wonder if the sponsors had anything to do with their decision?

forget phototgrapher's rights- what about human rights?
but really, can't they just put a limit on the size of your lens? |

Watching several police officers and security guards chase drunken naked guys around the field before tackling them was always the highlight of university football games for me.

I like the comment posted by Mike J...
"I guess it has too be P&S, otherwise the Chnese Government get's confused. The point and shoot is a very well known method in China so it's not very suprising, ist it?"
