| Just wondering...other than the obvious 85mm vs the 50mm, what does the 85mm have that the 50mm doesn't? Or is there an advantage in focal length that I don't know about? |

I think I'd go with 85mm on the 5D and 50mm on the 40D. On the 40D the 85mm is going to feel a bit too long.

2/3 stop less light? more elements? more weight?
If you like the focal length get it, it's superb from all I've heard. Really, both are. |
