I was doing some googling today looking for some new studio items and was pretty surprised by what I found.
At a reputable photography studio supplier a celing mounted track system for muslins starts at $119 and goes up from there. At a hospital supplier the same track system is about $75
Photography supplier's lowest priced "studio wind machine" is $600, but googling "garage wind machine" find a very similar fan for $189
Photography supplier's fog machine is $35, but halloween supply company has them at $19
... and the list goes on. Moral: shop around and think outside the photography box!

Funny finding the hospital part cheaper ... back in the 1970s, in a book called Design for the Real World, the design professor/author pointed out how many things were priced differently depending solely on the targeted market. My favorite was the medical supply catalogue which listed a stainless-steel multi-speed laboratory mixer for $289, also available in the Sears catalog as a "blender" for $39, or $29 if you preferred the tasteful pastel enamel finish ...
