While editing some photos today, I started getting this odd wavy border around my field of vision. I also had a blurry spot that stuck around for awhile. It was very strange...I kept wanting to look around the blurry spot, but couldn't since it was in my sight.
I finally gave up editing after it didn't go away for about 20 minutes. It did later go away, then came back briefly and then left again.
Anyone have any clue what that might have been? I'm working on a flat screen monitor in a room with light. |

I'm no longer in general practice, and not an eye specialist, but from my days as a GP, I'll have a go.
It sounds like a 'scotoma' - like a temporary 'blind spot', or island of defective vision, surrounded by normal visual acuity. In my understanding, its non specific, but could signify things like degeneration of the macula, usually related to ageing, optic neuritis ( which rarely indicates demyelinating diseases, including MS ), very high blood pressure, or an aura of migraine.
I'd get it checked out sometime soon, ..make sure it's not some indicator of any background health issues on the go. |

Thank you for the input. I wear glasses for some things, but generally not at the computer. I don't have any problems with high blood pressure, so that's an easy one to check and see if it's up for some reason (like editing 500 wedding photos!) My 47th birthday is coming up, so I guess things are starting to break down a bit more :P |

Did everything appear to move 5 inches to the right? Could be a ghost. :)

Did you get a headache afterward? Sounds like the aura of a classic migraine. Could be a possibility. |

Did it look something like this but more towards the outward peripheral vision area. Sorry but it was the best I could do in PS to recreate what it looks like when I have something happen to me. I usually starts small and begins to circle your peripheral vision. Sometimes it will stop before making a complete circle. You can see it with your eyes open or closed. Almost like a see through light in V wave pattern that circles the vision and you can see through the middle. Blink your eyes and it appears to become more pronounced.

I have what they call cluster headaches and this is classic sign one is coming on even though the headaches may not follow but usually dizziness will. Cluster headaches are known to be worse than a migraine and can last for days, not the pattern in your vision.

My first thought was migraine as well. I don't see wavy lines, but i get an annoying little black dot. I keep trying to clone it out, but it won't go away.
Oh, and I am NOT a doctor, nor should my observation be taken as educated at all. :) |

I'm not an eye specialist, but I am a Neurologist.
sinky has it mostly covered.
Optic neuritis, as mentioned above will not resolve this quickly, so do not google it! Probably occular migraine or an aura associated with migraine, particularly if you have a history of headaches. Migraine can do this without actually developing a headache. Vascular disease affecting the eye can do the same thing; however, you are only 46 ;) This is an important point, if you do not have history suggestive of migraine.
Since it sounds like a new problem for you, you should see your MD. You can PM any additional details if desired. |

I'm no eye Dr. But I had/have annoying little dot since I was 15. You might have a new eye floater. Better to get it checked out. I've had the same and only one for years. As long as you don't start seeing more it should be ok.

I've talked to my doctor about it, and he had the same concern. However, it is a clear indication of a migraine. Without fail, since I was about 15, I see a black dot, I get a migraine in about 3 hours.
My 13 yo nephew has started showing the same "symptoms" as well, and his doctor investigated it thoroughly. My little sister also has something very similar.
(The dot is not continuous.) |

That EXACT scenario happened to me one day while I was at work.. I was sitting in front of the computer when it happened too.. I sorta freaked out cause it wouldn't go away and I immediately went to my eye doctor.. By the time we were driving over there, the migraine headache kicked in.. I suffer from Migraines but they were always allergy related.. I think it was because I had been staring at a computer for 11 hours a day for 9 years and something finally had to give.. From that point on, I began taking regular breaks and rested my eyes.. It's never happened again so I hope it was just a one time deal for you too.. |
