You are correct. It has to do with some arcane sensor design technicality ( kirbic?). It's especially a problem in portrait work, where red people are an unfortunate result.
I slathered one of my current entries with color, then after I uploaded it and looked at it again, I bumped the saturation some more, to account for DPC tastes, which is probably what provoked Jutilda's comment. It's doing very well, though, despite the fact that the subject matter isn't really all that interesting. Am I a saturation whore? |

No, it's not your fault; Nikon users have to find some way to compensate, it's a proven fact :-)

Pretty much all of my images 'oversaturate' to some degree. I do it to get the black density that I like. I also do it in the darkroom, except there I'm using an enlarger and toners :)
If it's the 'Trend du Jour', I'd say that the trend has been going about 100 years strong :P |

Of the examples given by DrAchoo and scalvert I find all of them stunning and perfect for the subject. Maybe it is just when an image is so so and then there is this out of the ordinary cobalt sky and grass that is so green I'd be afraid of staining my shoes or feet if I stepped on it. LOL I think a good photo is a good photo no matter how it's done - I guess that's what makes it good. Shall I say good a few more times?

Personally I like photos to look pretty much how I took them, after all I took the shots because I liked what I saw, not because I envisioned editing the crap out of the colors. It worries me though, when I don't over saturate my entries that I will suffer for it since others here seem to like the bright blinding knock you in the n*ts color. |

Here is another view on the subject of color saturation.
A long time ago, one of my sons asked me " Pops, When did the world get color? I have seen that in all the old movies that the world was only black and white. Was everything still only black and white when you were my age? "
I have started backing off on saturation recently too. Sometimes, even using a polarizer will make the sky too blue for me. We do have outstanding sunsets most of the year here in Florida though. Especially inland from the west coast where I live.
However, sat sells.

Thanks for this thread. Now I'm getting killed with 3 and 4's and comments of "over saturated" two weeks ago I would have gotten 6 and 7's for the same shot. Go figure. Oh well, I like it and my kids think I'm great photographer. I just hope they don't find this thread or I'll be ruined! :) |

However, some photos are just naturally saturated -- I always shoot with my camera at the most "neutral" settings available ...
