Hi! I'd like to introduce myself. My name is David (like that isn't obvious, haha) I'm an 18 year old student from Daytona Beach, Florida. I was born in Venezuela and moved to the states when I was 13. I recently found a love for photography, and found this site. I have to be honest... I'm amazed by some of the work I've seen here. I wish I can get to your level someday soon. I know a lot of the technical side of photography, it's the "creativity" side that I need to work on, as well as good techniques.
I'll be soon taking a trip to Tennessee. Do you have any tips so I can come back with better picture than expected? Also, I ordered Tiffen UV filters for my three lenses. Is there any reason I should take them off at all?
I can't wait to get started in this amazing world of photography. I might be finally changing my major this fall for something that I really care about!
-David Zambrano

Hi David,
some tips -
Google "Rule of thirds" for basic composition rules. But remember, some rules are made to be broken.
If scoring high and winning ribbons is your goal, look at some the more successful photographers here, DrAchoo, De Sousa, IreneM, Scalvert, Larus. An amazing bunch, for sure.
Now, there are some amazing photographer here that do fantastic work, but are a little out side the box for mass appeal. Bear_Music, idnic, silverfox, biteme - All these photographers have won at times, but also enter some good images that don't get the scores they deserve.
Take the comments on your entries with an open mind, some will seem mean spirited, others are very helpful.
Shot and enter, listen to feed back, and learn from the vast array of photographers here at DPC.
Welcome and good luck.

Heey another David... haha. Thanks for the warm welcome.
I already got the rule of thirds down, what I usually do is make sure the subject is not in the dead center, then look around to see what the best background/foreground is.
I will check their work out tomorrow with more time. Also, your work is good as well. Keep it up!
I'm here to learn, grow, and become a better photographer; so I'll try to take every bit of criticism the right way, and learn from it. |

just one of those things, read and post in the forums enough and you'll see why, there are many reasons.
another tip i would add to the earlier comment is even the mean spirited ones probably have something to teach. unless its just something like "you suck" you can probably get something from it, some commenter's can get right to the point if you know what i mean |

If you flip your self portrait L/R, it will look like someone else shot it instead of a mirror image.
This thread is a good read to help you get your feet on the ground here.
DPC Unofficial Welcome Mat Thread
Look at a lot of images, post a lot of images, and make a lot of comments is the best way to learn what you like and want to do. You can then focus on one area of photography to improve at a time.
Side challenges are great opportunities to share, meet people, and learn a lot. As a bonus, you will get a lot of thoughtful comments if you give comments. I think you have to be a member to post a portfolio so you can post thumbs directly into the threads from it.
Have fun while you learn.

Welcome to DPC, David! I am tapping a keg and roasting a pig in your honor. Last time I did that, my dyslexia kicked in and I ended up with hot beer and, well, nevermind - but I'll not make that mistake again!
Enjoy. |

Welcome! Where in Tennesse are you going?
As far as I know, there's no reason to remove the UV filter except for cleaning. I'd love to hear from others if that's not correct. |

There are good multicoated and usually expensive filters, and cheap ones, and there is a difference. It shows up when shooting into the light.
In Tn, I recommend Cades Cove in the Nat'l forest. It's a driving trip through history. It's near Gatlinburg.

Welcome, David. If you can afford it, buy yourself one of those fancy blue shirts so you can upload pictures and participate in members challenges. Also, take Scarbrd's advice, he sums it up quite well. |

To be honest, I feel very welcome, and I really appreciate that. I only got a comment on flickr but it made my morning! wow, it feels good when others say good things about your work. This is adding to me wanting to be a photographer.
I won't lie, this is getting a little wierd... Art Roflmao, i hope you didn't tap the pig too hard hahaha.
If anyone here plays or used to play paintball, then you'll know about PBNation. PBN is a paintball forum where 50% are kids and 90% of the whole community is very arrogant and cocky. So I know how to get the good out of the bad comments ;]
Oh Bebe, we're staying in a cabin in Pigeon Forge. Its a little town by Gatlinburg, so I'm sure we'll pay a visit to Cades Cove MelonMusketeer. I've been to Tennessee before. I'm thinking we need to go to Rock City, Ruby Falls, Cades Cove, and thats about what I have in mind haha.

In Pigeon Forge, there is a pancake house called "The Red Rooster." Doesn't look like much, but it was awesome.
If you are going up for the July 4th weekend, apparently Patriot's Park is going to have a really good fireworks display.
Also, in Gatlinburg, there is a "nature drive" that is kinda cool. |

Right, Normal isnt the words that I would use to describe my fellow teammate :) Unless of course there is a big AB in front of it... :)
Welcome David,
The longer you stay, the more you will understand... There is no such thing as normal here...... :) But normal is boring :) |

karmat Actually we're leaving the 3rd, so we'll be there for the 4th. Thanks for the tip, I'm writing that down! Also the nature drive is Cades Cove, and I'm thinking of going there too. Hopefully I'll see a bear, BEAR HUG! hahaha.
I agree that normal is boring... so yay for abnormal? ;]
I already know I'm getting a membership here, I just want to lurk around a little more and maybe enter 5 open challenges before making the full commitment... |

No, Cades Cove is several miles outside of Gburg/PF. The nature drive I'm thinking about is literally just off the main drag of Gburg. If you go up the main drive, at the end, past Ober Gatlinburg, there is a road that goes to the left. Follow it, and you will come upon a "trail" that has some houses, etc. similar to CC. It is bizarre because you would never suspect you were less than a mile away from "downtown."

I just posted two new albums of my 07 Tn photos at my .mac gallery. Have a look to get your anticipation level up. They are the Roaring Forks hike, Cades Cove, Elkmont, Greenbriar, and Dollywood. We didn't make it all the way to Roaring Forks Fall because it was threatening to rain and we had a 3 and 6 year old with us.
Here is the link; Waddy's .Mac Gallery
It may be a few minutes before they all show up at the gallery site, as I just uploaded them.
