That "Cheesy" little scenic road in Monterey is probably Cannery Row, and unless I'm mistaken that's where you'll find your cowboy monkey :-) If you've read Steinbeck you'll want to see Cannery Row. And Monterey has one of the world's best aquariums; DO NOT MISS IT. There's also a great aquarium on central Oregon coast, I think around Newport (?), that (at least the last time I was there) has stunning jellyfish exhibits that are very photographable.

It would be a shame to miss Sedona if you were passing by anyway. Check it out between Joshua Tree and GCNP. Its a beautiful town, and it is easy to get to the canyon for sunrise from there.

If you are going from Monterey to Big Sur, don't forget to stop off at Pt. Lobos, just a little to the south of Monterey.

I hope the Big Sur fires haven't been a problem for you. If you can't take the PCH drive you'll be missing a major highlight. I don't think it's very easy to bypass a small section of that route. Let us know how you're doing and where you're at.

UTAH: Not too far from Canyonlands is Dead Horse State Park ... definitely worthwhile to add that for pure photo opportunities. Oh,you might want to tack on Bryce Canyon...I love that place. They always recommend shooting in Bryce, Canyonlands, etc. at sunset or sunrise ... those rocks turn brilliant orange.
OREGON: Crater Lake ... the most amazing blue water you'll ever see.
YELLOWSTONE: I actually found the northeast part of the park to be stunningly beautiful and less crowded than most areas too (a big bonus for me).
Sounds like a great trip. ENJOY.
PS: sending you a PM too.

hello everyone. yes, i am back from my crazy trip. here is my recap :)

Idaho- we drove through idaho in one day, considering we went through the rather skinny portion. on our way through, my mom and i stopped at a gorgeous lake. it was conpletely uninhabited, no houses anywhere. because of the tall trees surounding it, the reflection was perfect and the surface was like looking through glass. i also discovered while driving through idaho that taking pictures of the shadows of semis, tree, etc on the road is entertaining:)

Oregon- oregon was beautiful. we drove along the border or washington and oregon through the most BEAUTIFUL countryside i have ever seen. all the fields were green, and many of the barns and silos looked early 20 century if not earlier. when we got to the coast, my mom and i visited cannon beach, which was unfortunatly crawling with tourists. the reflection there was not as cool as i hoped, but we couldn't get there earlier then lunch time since we had stayed in portland the night before. driving down the oregon coast was one of the best parts of the entire trip. i hope to return there next summer to spend more time hiking and photographing all the wonderful things. one of the places my mom and i stayed in oregon was the Driftwood Village Motel, which was incredible. Amazingly enough, the owner is from the flathead valley, which is where i live! it's a small world people. anyways, while i was staying at the Driftwood, i took a legendary photo of the setting sun cradled in the nook of a tree with a seagull flying past. i didnt even know the seagull was coming, i just pressed the shutter and freaked out hoping i actually got the gull in flight. the timing was freaking PERFECT!! wahahah. the only extremly weird thing about the whole state was that they dont allow you to pump your own gas. whats with that??

California- when we first entered california, i started to hate it. i really dislike the driving skills of most californians, so i spent most of my time leaning out the window shaking my fists at the idiots driving near me. the only two cool things i could see in california(as a state) was that everone had extremly nice cars and that they have a very cool zoo. im sure there are other cool things, but those were the only two i could see(dont beat me up 'cause of that please:). the san diego zoo was amazing, if you haven't been there, go. the wild animal park wa pretty neat too, but i was so worn out from the whole day of the zoo the previous day, i didnt enjoy it as much as i might have. the next big stop was joshua tree national park, but i was extremly uninpressed. i wouldn't recomend it to anyone, seriously. i did get some interesting photos of some cacti(cactusses?), as well as photos of huge psycho ants from hell(i hate ants).

Nevada-nothing happened in nevada, we drove through Las Vegas, thats about it

Utah- Utah! We saw the Grand Canyon, that was pretty cool. we got there driving from Palm Springs at about 11 pm and had to set up our tent with just my car lights. lol we managed to do it in under 5 minutes, we must be amazing:) lol. the next day we took a tour down the canyon via mule(this is the north rim mind you) and it was awesome! definatly worth it if you are visiting. next we saw arches(we skipped Bryce 'cause a former ranger who was camping near us said that at that time of year the tourists made it not even worth the trip). arches was very, VERY cool. took some fun photos, one of which i entered in the 'weathered' challenge. we then drove all the way up to wyoming, which from what i can remember was rather uneventful.

Wyoming- wyoming was pretty cool. the scenery, though rather flat, was interesting to look at, and spotting pronghorn was entertaining:) at some point we stopped at some sort of mine right near the road across from some railroad tracks, which i photographed. the mine thing was creepy, but my mom took lots of pics of it. ooo and we found a super old Sprite bottle half buried in the ground there. onward we drove, and soon started to become homesick:(. when we finally got to yellowstone i was all for just driving through and going home. instead, we spent the night at a camp a million miles away from the park and had to drive a whole hour to get back the next day. ugh, online reservations suck. going back to the park was one of the best ideas ever. i took photos of the geysers, which are freaking CRAZY!! its almost terrifying to be standing there and you realize, 'oh shit, im standing on a volcano'. LOL too much fun. we got to the paintpot geyser things pretty early, so we stood in the geyser steam to keep warm:) strangely enough, i never actually noticed the geysers smelling nasty. we did go to Old Faithful, which is a waste of time. it is rather impressive, but fighting the people is just insane. while running towards Old Faithful, i dropped my telephoto lens while trying to put it on my camera. really crappy. my UV protector shattered all over the pavement and everyone freaked out except me for some reason. Usually im freaking out when it comes to things like that. so we photographed old faithful, ate 10 dollar sandwhices, and left.

Montana, HOME!!- the day after Old Faithful we went to the Lewis and Clark Caverns, which were very cool. if you dont mind walking long distances, its well worth the stop. soon, we were home and that was cool. on the way home we stayed in Butte and i played Keno against myself lol. home was great, it feels awesome to be back in Kalispell:)

That sounds like one hell of a trip, and I'm JEALOUS. I couldn't help but notice that Orlando FL was not on your list, and I thought I would congratulate you on your wise decision making on excluding it! :-)

Thanks for the recap. It sounds like you didn't make the Pacific Coast Highway or else our crazy drivers (sorry about that) distracted you so much you couldn't enjoy it. Glad you liked our zoo and wild animal park. We've had annual passes to them for years so we sort of take them for granted. You had a huge agenda and accomplished a lot in 3 weeks.
