Rather than hijacking the other 50mm thread... I really really love my 50mm 1.8 but as mentioned by others the AF is a touch slow and I finally experienced that first hand the weekend before last when shooting my first wedding. I wasn't the prime shooter(Thankfully lol)as it was more to help a good friend of mine and had a BLAST but there were a couple times that I struggled a bit with the AF. Anyway I know build wise the 1.4 is better but I guess Im trying to justify the cost of selling off the 1.8 (lol I know I wont get alot) and getting the 1.4 and figured Id ask anyone that have the 1.4 and either have or had the 1.8 and can give me an honest opinion...

I dunno... I have the 50f1.4 and it's incredibly average IMO. In hind site, I would have skipped it and went for something like that Sigma 30f1.4.... Stay with the plastic. If you want a fast prime - try the 85f1.8 instead as it's just amazing.

I know the 85mm 1.8 is sweet and would have prob bought the one that was for sale on here recently but I really dont want to go with anything longer than 50mm, Id actually like to go wider but not liking some of the reviews Ive seen... If I can get these two sets of photos sorted through and edited Ill post examples why I love the 50mm so much.

Then have a look at that 30mm - bit wider and just as fast as the 50mm.

There is a Sigma 50mm 1.4 just released that has a fast Hypersonic Motor...that might be worth considering... I have the 30mm 1.4 and it is a good lens, but my 50mm 1.8 is the right range for portraits. I also have a 85mm 1.8 and that is superb, sharp and great results (all Nikon). If I had to choose a fave it would be the 50mm 1.8 though. I have considered the 50mm 1.4 Nikon, but the 1.8 is fine...look at librodo's work

How does the Canon 35mm f/1.x fair? Particularly with regard to focusing performance.

1.4 is worth picking up. Still inexpensive as far as lenses go, much faster to focus, better build and you get F1.4 to boot.
