My extension tube set just arrived from Adorama!
Excitedly, I went straight to test them out on my Canon 24-105 f/4L. I had read that chromatic aberration was fairly rough on this combination, and I found it to be true. But one has to give it a try, right?! Especially with the IS.
My impressions were good overall. At max magnification, CA and working distance (distance from subject to front of lens) were pretty rough. Working distance was about 1-2 cm. See CA in the max magnification shot. I found that while auto focus did "work", there wasn't enough light for it to lock, though it might be better in full sunlight.
At a moderate magnification, however, CA was a bit better and working distance increased. The fly shot is representative of this.
I have uploaded a photostream to flickr documenting this.

I'll also be adding samples of the Canon 50mm f/1.8 and Sigma 70-300mm Macro. I've read that primes perform better (CA-wise) with tubes, so we'll see. We'll also see how much I miss the IS on the other two lenses. Unfortunately, I'm not a huge fan of the 70-300 IQ to start with, so I don't expect to be impressed.
Now all I have to do is get my hands on a true macro lens and we'll have a real shootout! =D Anybody in the Denver area willing to loan one out?
Cheers!

| PS, you might also check out my reversing ring thread. This setup used the 50mm reversed on the front of the 70-300, which provided insane levels of magnification (almost 10x by my measurements). |
