Some of my all time favorites.

Ooh, my favorite since I was a kid (although I hate to admit, I've never read much otherwise). I can't wait to see Prince Caspian this weekend.

Did anyone mention the The Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin?

My apologies if this book was already posted but I don't think I saw it listed.

Edit: Ooops...I do see it below...I'll have to think of a different one now...

I havn't read it, but a friend assures me that Eragon is a really great read (he warned me not to be put off by the film which is mainly aimed at children, as apparently the book is very different). Personally I love 'The Pianist' (though its not really bedtime reading) and 'Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World' by Murakami.

Eragon and the "sequel" Eldest are awesome

Definitely second "Flowers for Algernon". I need to find a copy and re-read it. And Nivens and Pournelle - "Lucifer's Hammer", I think it was called. Read it when I was MUCH younger and may have to get a copy of that and read it again. Nice thing about getting older - I can re-read books and not remember that I've already read them.

This is one of the few sci-fi books which has been made into a really good movie -- Charly -- for which Cliff Robertson won the Best Actor Oscar.

Even now , I break out the Lion, Witch and Wardrobe series (C S lewis). It is brilliant, I really enjoy them. And I have read thousands upon thousands of books, but I still go to these when I have had enough of Murder Mystery (my favs)

Have decided to go down the Ender Series route first so 'Speaker for the Dead' is now on order :)

Okay Andi, now you have to tell us the whole story!
06/18/2008 05:30:09 PM · #92
Pretty much anything by Nevil Shute.

On the Beach
The Pied Piper

There are plenty more but these are the two I remember the best.

If you like mysteries: Anything by Ian Rankin.

It seems it has fallen to me to explain Sheila ;o) Here goes...

Last Friday I went to Andi's for the weekend. When we got to the front door Andi was pleased to see a package that looked a lot like a book waiting for him. He explained he had just finished the first of the Enders Series the night before and was looking forward to starting the new book that night....After making the tea Andi sat down and opened the package...I'm not sure who was more shocked when he pulled out THIS book!!!

So Andi, anything to say?

Now, thats just cruel T! You forgot to mention that I 'assumed' it was my book and I did show you the purchasers name that was hidden when first looked at AND I share my letterbox with the farmhouse!
06/18/2008 05:42:32 PM · #97
Talj, you actually BELIEVED he was shocked and that he didn't order it???

And of course he wouldn't put his own name on the order, for that exact reason...

After all, anyone who would wear rufflebummed panties.... well, 'nuff said ;)

LMAO! To be honest Sheila, I felt sorry for him...he looked like he didn't know what to do next (I'd have been seriously worried if he'd looked calm, opened the book and started reading!!)

Having shared Andi's embarrassing moment with the world I better add that yes, once we took a look at the packaging, there was someone elses name on the front (but hidden underneath a stupid label) and the book did belong to someone else...who I have Andi's assurances is a real person ;o)
