What is the best?
and what is the best free software I can find?
I know the answer to both questions is probably different. |

Yes. I don't know why...this stupid keyboard messes up when I am typing on this site...every key seems to stick.

I recommend Photomatix, not free, but pretty reasonable for what it does.

Yup, Photomatix Pro is current state of the art. Outstanding program. I don't have any experience with the free ones. There's a new one coming soon called "Essential HDR", was in beta as "Wukong", and it's going to be half the price of Photomatix. A bunch of us were testing it in beta, and it is very interesting, possibly the best choice for casual HDR users (as opposed to power users, Photomatix is MUCH more elaborate in its options).

//www.easyhdr.com/ is another HDR program that is easier to use than Photomatix, and its inexpensive.
It also does a few things that Photomatix doesn't do. |

There is a small plugin for CS3 that works pretty decent... it is REDYNAMIX from Dynamic-Photo HDR.

and has options galore...I love the aligning function (cuase I never seem to have my tripod on me when I do bracketed images...I know it's stupid but I'm no genius anyways) and the colorize thing, and the preset modes such as b/w, sepia, soften, etc. I sit for hours playing with old images seeing what I can come up with. |
