Areas around here (southern Wisconsin) have been hard hit indeed. The worst flash flooding in over 25 years I've heard. Bad stuff indeed.

Northern Louisiana got hit about 3 weeks ago. Lost a car in the mess! It's just a thing and was replaced pretty quick. I hope everyone up north comes out OK.

I heard that the floods around Cedar City, Iowa, broke all records. Instead of being just several inches above the last record for flood water height, it beet the old record by several feet.

We got more rain last night! This really sucks right now. I feel like I'm a professional mover now, I've moved so much stuff in the last two weeks!
Here's a link to some pictures of the cities just north of where I am.

I've been wondering about the DPC folks from Indiana. They too have been hit hard and I think Indianapolis has also had some flooding trouble.

Another bad thing about us getting hammered is that a lot of other people will feel the effects. The Mississippi has been shut down to barges up here, so no grain, coal, etc. gets shipped anywhere.

My Brother's in the National Guard in Indianapolis. Last weekend, he left to do his usual "one weekend a month" thing. Camp Aterbery (totally spelled wrong) has been on lock down ever since. He has been working on building leveys and helping out people in the area.

If there are any DPC'ers in the Iowa area, you may be able to help a lot of people to save their treasured photos by alerting the news media in the area about the people at this site. It came up during the New Orleans disaster, and I saw it here in Judi's thread about the Queensland Au flooding.

Drove through that area last weekend on my way to Milwaukee...it was very bad. I94 was closed down for 70 miles between Madison and Mauston because the freeway was flooded in the South/Eastbound direction. I94 was also closed between Madison and Milwaukee for the same reason and that the water was OVER the bridges. Overall, it's not so good down there.

Thanks for posting that. I will spread the word about them. Right now there are still a lot of people that can't even get to their homes, so it may be awhile before people even know what may need to be replaced/restored.

If anyone is interested, here are some pictures of my hometown, under water. These were taken by a friend of mine. The pics of the boat club is the club where my family belongs to and our cabin is on the island straight across from it. Burlington, IA flood pics
Here is a link to a few pictures of the flood in the town where I live right now. (20 miles south of Burlington, IA).Ft. Madison Flood
Here's some pics from the local radio station of the surrounding areas.

Ahhhhhh, I just saw a story on the news where a family just threw away their photos because of flood damage. I sent the link to several news channels in hopes that they can get the word out better than I can.
That seems like such a good program, and I didn't realize until I went back and looked at their website that it's volunteer and non-profit. I think I know where I will donate some of my money to this year!

Thanks for posting the photos. It sure looks like tough times are ahead in your area. I still remember cleaning up after a hurricane flooded the homes along the gulf shore in 1960. Stinking salt water mud was about 3 inches deep everywhere in the homes that were left.
Also, thank you for alerting the local media about Op photo rescue. I wish there was more that I could do to help out.
Are there any air boats in that area? They are great for flood work because they are flat on the bottom, with nothing sticking down, so they can run in only a couple of inches off water. They can also cross grassy places if the grass is wet. Here's a link.

icu1965 I grew up in Davenport Iowa, just down the road from you, and my family is still there and in the maquoketa area. Luckily they live in the Northwest part of town and are on much higher ground then the people down by the river. Still, the power went out the other night and within a matter of about 8 minutes the whole downstairs was wet as the sump pump went out with the power. All things considered, not a big deal for them, just more of an inconvenience. I feel for you guys, and keeping my fingers and toes crossed.

That's too bad about your families house. But it is cool that I finally met someone from around the area! We're about the same age too. My friends used to go up there to Sneakers back in the day! (that's so sad that I remember that.)
I have two aunts that have lost their homes. One of the local helicopters flew over and you couldn't even see the roof of the one aunts house. You could see the neighbors roof, that's the only way we knew where her house was supposed to be. My mom and dad live on the bluff so they're ok, but their cabin is probably going to be a huge mess. One of my best friends got clearance from the coast guard to go on the river, it's currently closed to all boat traffic, to check out the cabins. We're supposed to go on Thursday, so hopefully we still have cabins to check on by then!

I'd take salt water and mud over what we're going to have! Raw sewage is not a pleasant smell and it's not any better knowing that's what's in your homes and cabins!
I know someone with a sea plane, but the river has been shut down to any kind of traffic. Hopefully our clearance holds out for a couple of days so I can get out there!!

Sneakers! I had completely erased that place from my memory! lol Believe it or not, I actually wrote a story for the highschool newspaper when they opened! :-)

The midwest is a tough place to live. If it's not floods, it's a drought, or a blizzard, etc. Then again, here in Fl we have hurricanes, and I've got a bad feeling about this year. With all of the crazy weather all over the world, it seems like we are due to get smashed again. 2004 was rough, but now I live in dowtown Orlando in a neighborhood filled with massive old oak trees just waiting to fall.

Very sorry to hear about you relatives homes. Unfortunately there's not a lot you can do except wait and see what's left when the waters recede. I'll be thinkin about you guys!

I am glad to hear that you are still ok and able to get on line to keep us updated.

One of the local tv stations wants to interview someone who has used the photo rescue service. Is there anyone around the area who has used this service? Or do you know anyone around here that wouldn't mind being interviewed? Please let me know so that I can contact the station asap!

Here's the link (with info in the thread) to what happened back during Katrina ==> VOLUNTEER! Photographers help Katrina victims salvage photos.

I originally posted this from a newspaper article (Operation Photo Rescue). It was some personnel from Fredericksburg (The Free Lance-Star) that got it going.

Jess, I don't have time right now, but you may try contacting someone thru the photo rescue website, or by telephone, and they may have someone who can be the spokesperson in your area.
