OK, this is a bit weird.. I was on the BBC News website just catching up on my current affairs, and in an article about Rwanda I decided to highlight the word Rwanda and use the right click menu to run a google search on a new tab so I could read up a bit more on it.. However this then popped up on my screen..

Why would that pop up when running a google search? I hadnt, at that point, clicked on any other websites.. weird or just me being a wee bit paranoid?

edit - subsequent searches have not reproduced this error..

Probably the CIA owns the website about Rwanda you were accessing. They own a BUNCH of websites, no kidding :-)

Go to https://www.odci.gov to reproduce the error (you might have to clear your browser cache to make it work). That domain is redirected to cia.gov. Since the SSL certificate belongs to cia.gov and not odci.gov, your browser gives you a warning. I'm not an expert on SSL certificates, but you may find out more with some Googling or Wikipedia.

By the way, this is not a CIA issue, it happens on all sites with SSL certificates that do not match the domain.

It was probably this one.

And I got the non-matching-certificate-name warning, just didn't specifically mention the names. Nope, no need to be paranoid :)

The thing is, I didnt even visit any website.. basically the BBC had the word RWANDA on their page, so I highlighted it and right-clicked in firefox so I could run a google search on a new tab (its a feature of firefox), so the only page I accessed was google, I didnt even go to any other site other than BBC where I already was and Google..

I assumed it was a link embedded in the article but you're right, it's just the word "Rwanda". (I found the article to try to reproduce your results.)

Using Firefox my Googling worked fine, bringing up the CIA factbook in third, didn't try to go to anywhere that gave certificate warning, BUT.....

AVG scans each page in the search result, gives a green star/white checkmark to those that it deems safe. CIA got a question mark with the comment, "Unknown - AVG Search-Shield was unable to scan this page." Looks like the CIA are the paranoid ones ;)

The site BeeCee mentioned is one of the first Google results for "Rwanda" (number three for me, after two Wikipedia entries). I can think of two ways how you got there:

1) For some reason you accidentally clicked twice and (maybe combined with a lag or some other weird effect) thereby already selected one of the Google results. However, this is unlikely since you still had the BBC page in front of you when the warning appeared.

2) Did you use a feature of your browser to do the search for highlighted words? Or a special plugin? Maybe the software you use automatically accesses the CIA Factbook for certain kinds of words (because it is one of the best sources for information about countries, for example). Other plugins have an option to directly go to Wikipedia.

And then, someone at the CIA might have done sloppy work and now you discovered everything.

3) Have you traveled abroad recently? Do you have foreign friends? Do you call them often? Wait, isn't there someone watching you from the other side of the street? You never know...

Its over man.

Change your name, find a good plastic surgeon to change your face, forget anyone you ever knew- and hope they forget you. I'd suggest going for the "full change" (if you get what I mean "Mrs. Simms") maybe that'll throw them off for a little bit. Time is wasting, what are you doing still reading this, haven't you ever seen Enemy of the State. They're printing playing cards with your face on the ace of spades right now. Run man, RUN!!!!!!

Oh, most important, pack up your camera gear and ship it to me. This will really confuse them.

Viaje seguro mi amigo (blame babelfish if the translation is wrong)

Simms,

I'm sorry to say, I work undercover for the CIA. I have been assigned to your case. All I can say is... since we're such good buddies... how would you like to die?

Cheers,
Slippy

Hell, don't worry about Slippy. No way the CIA would employ him. He's got far to many "RED" ribbons.

Not to mention the fact that he can't keep his mouth shut.

Wasn't there that one stint at trying to take over the world thing?

Then that proves that he is CIA.
