If you're looking for a small camera shop in northern VA, let me recommend Dominion Camera. They're friendly, knowledgeable, and just helped me in a serious jam.

Since I've bought most of my camera equipment there, when my beloved Tamron 17-50 had a broken filter ring, I took it there to send it off for repair. The lens functioned perfectly, but the filter ring could be lifted away from the body.

They said it would take 4 weeks, and it took just that. But while the filter ring is now fine, the aperture doesn't close at all. It's like the aperture tab has been disconnected. I was upset because we leave on our anniversary trip in a week, and I really wanted to take my lens.

Without blinking, the owner checked it, verified it was broken, grabbed another one off the shelf and said "you'll be very careful with this new lens on your trip, right?" He copied the original repair slip info to the new one and sent me on my way.

No charge and he didn't even ask me for my credit card number as a deposit. He just trusted me with his $469 lens and to bring it back.

That's gold medal-level small-store service.

That's truly above-and-beyond service. I'm glad you decided to share the story and I hope other photographers in the area see it.

I know people in NoVA that occasionally ask me for advice when they're looking to buy equipment. I'll be sure to mention Dominion the next time it happens.

Thanks for sharing the story, and Happy Anniversary to you both. I hope that they have your A reconnected by the time you return from your trip.

Do they provide service online? I don't mind giving my business to the smaller shops that provide quality service!

I'm not sure what you're looking for online, but here's their Web site.

They don't do repairs as far as I know; they just send stuff back to the mfr.

GeneralE, they're in Falls Church in case that's relevant for your friends.
