Ok... I have $2000 to blow.. and it's either get a new computer (ideally for photoshop CS3) Or D300

If I buy the camera and use my current computer.. I am restricted to using Photoshop Elements..
If I buy the computer and use my D70.... I missing out on the quality of the D300

Ideally I wish to get into the business of photography in a year or two.
Either way... it will be at least 6 months before I can have both.

hmmmm.. I don't know. What would you do?

Upgrade the functionality of your existing computer and buy a used D200. Should have enough cash left over for a burger and fries.

I'd go for the computer. If you lack the power to work with and store your images, then there's not much point in having a fancy camera.

And I don't know what kind of computer you're thinking about, but when I got my new Dell desktop a year ago, I got it pretty darn powerful and it still only ran about $1100. So if you don't blow the whole $2k on the computer, you'll be able to get the camera that much sooner!

I'd go with the computer. You can continue to take good pictures with the D70 and make them better by upgrading your PS skills. The quality camera doesn't always increase the quality photographer. You can always upgrade to a different camera or work with the one you have. Get the camera in 6 months...it'll also be cheaper then.

Ya...I'm looking at the dell that runs about $1500 with a 24" monitor

$1,568.00
+
$649.00

$2,217.00

Come up with $217.00 more and you'll never regret it!

Apple is a poor choice and really requires a compatible income. Since you have "found money" and are not prepared to buy a new mac every week I'd stick with PC.

That said, I agree, go with the PC and not the camera. I know the D300 is nice and fancy but at the end of the day you will be facing that slow computer and hating your day.

Or, put it into savings and try to save up the difference to upgrade and get a D300, why spend it right this second?

Why would he have to buy a new Mac every week?

Sorry a bit of sarcasm. I know that keeping up with macs long term takes more money than with PCs. It is the Target compared to Wal-Mart. They look nice and run great but you pay for it in higher hardware costs and less backwards compatibility.

Where do you fall on post processing? If you lean to camera with little post then buy the camera, if you are a budding digital artist then buy the computer.

You also should know that asking questions like x or y on a photg forum will always result in x and y :-)

I bought a Dell a few months ago at Walmart similar to this one Dell

But the one I got has a 22 inch monitor and I paid 748 for it. It is fantastic!

You can do something like that, search for a used D200 and go from there!

Yes, Photoshop does seem to win lots of ribbons here. ;)

It's not the computer, it's the programmer!

I mean, it's not the photographer, it's photoshop!

I mean, when they did away with glass plates photography was ruined! No, that was color that ruined it.

Mac! No, PC! Linux is the only way to run a computer. Get gimp!

Without a good vision of what you want the image to be the tools don't matter. If your vision is beyond the tools at your disposal then get more money.

Money can't buy happiness, but man can it get you some really neat toys, er, tools.

"Keeping up" with Macs is only necessary if you upgrade your software, which these days is almost unnecessary unless you are a publisher or print shop (like I work in) and your customers bring in files in newer versions. Where I work we still use Macs as much as 12 years old (actually the oldest running maching is a Mac clone -- try and find one of those!), and they continue to do the job they are designed to do. We also had to get an up-to-date intel/Mac (maybe that iMac branding was a subtle form of conditioning!) to run the latest version of QuarkXPRESS.

Macs also come with software which is actually useful: photo editor, movie editor, DVD authoring, multi-track music studio ...

Based on several years of reading these forums, I'd say at least 90% of those who have switched from Windows to Mac have confirmed that they had (at last) made the correct choice. I can't remember reading much fron anyone who had switched from Mac to Windows ...

Also: if you really want/need to run Windows, you can do so on any of the new Macs in any of three different ways, including being able to run both OSs simultaneously, and transfer files by dragging from one desktop/window to the other ... but you'll have to actually buy Windows :-(
