I need help finding some hi-res photos of pine trees and/or pine tree branches. I̢۪m creating a metal art object and I need photos for source material to create a design drawing for the piece. I̢۪ll use the drawing to make a mask for acid etching the design into copper. I will only use the photos to help me make the drawing. I will not display them or make them available to the public in any way.
It̢۪s funny, I actually live in a forest, but there are no pine trees. It̢۪s all fir, cedar, alder, and maple trees. I need pine trees and we have none. Rather than make a long, fuel-expensive expedition to find pine trees, I thought maybe some of you might help.
What I need is clear, detailed photos of one or two pine branches viewed from the side. I can also use photos of forest scenes containing pine trees. The lighting is not critical, but the background must be simple and uncluttered by other objects. In other words, the branch (or tree) can be silhouetted or well lit, as long as it stands out clearly against the background.
Here is an example of a photo that would work if it were hi-res (although I would prefer one with fewer pinecones):

Forest scenes with just a few pine trees like this would also be helpful:

Can anyone help me with this, please?

I will look to see what else I have. I can't recall how many pine tree shots I took at Yosemite, but I should have something you may be able to use. I may have some close up type stuff as well from my trips to Vermont. I'll take a look and let you know by PM.

There's a huge old Monterey pine at my son's school -- I can take some close-up detail shots tomorrow morning when I drop him off.
Here's one shot I have posted here with pine trees ...

I don't think the 1st picture you posted is a pine, looks like a spruce or fir.

Thanks for pointing that out Karen. I guess I'm not much of a tree expert. :)
Anyway, It's still an example of the type of view I need.

OK, wanted to make sure, because it is going to be hard to get a photo of a pine branch like that. They are bushier and the cones grow on the tips. There are a lot of pines around here, I will see what I can do for you tomorrow.

Hmm, I'm tree-ignorant then. I thought those were pine cones on a pine tree?

No, I believe that's a fir -- note how the (short) needles come directly off the branch all along its length. In a pine, the needles come in "bundles" of two or three, clustered nearer the ends of the branches.

Everybody's needling me about my lack of tree knowledge. What a prickly thread. I should've stayed in my cone of silence.

If you don't spruce up your language the fir will surely fly ... cedar it goes now!

Maybe a young branch with new needles? :)
I used to spend summers at my Grandfather's place in Modoc County (northern California) and they had lots of pine trees. However, that was so long ago I hardly remember what they looked like. We may have some pines here in northwest Oregon somewhere, but I don't know where they would be.
Many thanks for the help Karen!

Mick- I live in Colorado and could get you some pics tomorrow (the 10th) morning, but I'm wondering what kind of pine you want. Does it matter so long as it is a pine (IE, Ponderosa, Lodgepole, Bristlecone...) Any preference or do they all work, and also, do you still need any pics in the first place? I'd be willing to help you out if needed. If I don't get a response sometime in the next 12 hours, I will have to wait until the next morning (Wednesday) before I can grab any due to my work schedule. |

Well, I ended up going by several types of pine trees this afternoon. If you PM me an email address I will send you a PDF "proof sheet" from which you can select some files. |

Any kind of pine should be okay, the less cluttered the image the better it will work.
Thanks Derek!
